I have watched the Texans wage their lonely war against the bean heretics ( I myself was seduced by their lies, for a while) and the propagation of their bitter and poisonous fruit. Although the war appears to go in the Texans' favor I have quietly watched this insidious hydra sprout another head.

All over the US of A I have seen the gullible and the wicked advocate for the use of OKRA in gumbo. I have personally witnessed these trees of Sodom sprout throughout this land leaving their slimy fruit in gumbo, EVEN IN TEXAS. I am convinced that the source of this wickedness is the Babylon of the South, New Orleans. THIS HERESY MUST BE STAMPED OUT!

TL:DR - Okra does not belong in gumbo!

PS: If you put tomatoes in gumbo you're already going to hell.

I had Chili con carne (chili with meat) tonight

So if Chili con carne is Chili with Meat, then what is Chili without Beans, Tomato sauce?

Okra should only be served breaded and fried.

Chili without meat is just peppers.

Okra isn't food.

Isn't gumbo that funny chili made with sausage, shrimp and crawdads?

And you're wondering if something called okra should go in it?
Lighten up

I'm kidding.

Of course okra should go in it.

Mmmmmm okra.  I put it in soups sometimes.  Fried, too.

Gumbo is okra.  If you don't use okra to thicken it but use file powder (fe-lay, powdered sassafras leaves) to thicken it, you have something other than gumbo.

Can you make chile without peppers?

Nope. The word for gumbo does NOT come from the West African word for okra. Very common myth.

I can't believe I just corrected you on something, made my night.

Nope. The word from Gumbo is derived from the Choctaw by way of Chickasaw word for File powder, Kombo.

File belongs in gumbo. Some of the time.

I used to eat a Creole dish when I was younger that was called "okra and tomatoes". It is extremely common from Lake Charles to Biloxi and I have never heard it referred to as "gumbo and tomatoes". There is a reason for that.

Emphasis on "used to". No way I would eat that by choice again.

There are two types of cooks, those who think they are culinary artists and aren't, and those who are.
More times than not, who cooks it means as much as what is in the dish. Beans or okra aren't going to make or destroy a dish like chili or gumbo if the cook is worth a damn.

I have never had Gumbo, so I have no idea what it is. I do like fried okra. Here, chilli beans is the norm, and chilli is only served on hot dogs.
