With all the talk about gun bans etc,, even "non-gun" people are talking about it.  Friends of mine who don't shoot, but know I have ARs, are talking about how my ARs will be confiscated.   Whatever.

But that got me thinking.  They have no idea how many there are out there.  But then again, neither do I.

Any body have any real data on an estimate of how many ARs are in civilian hands in the US?

Seventy Eleventy-leven billion guns are out there.  Besides, if there's ever a confiscation program, you'll be reading a lot of "boating" stories that will be tears to anyone's eyes...

I've attempted to find the answer to this question before and failed.

According to this London Guardian article, over 2 million AR's intended for domestic purchase were manufactured between 2000-2010 by S&W, DPMS, Bushmaster, RRA, Stag, Armalite, Colt and Oly Arms. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/dec/17/how-many-ar15-rifles-sold

Unfortunately this doesn't include the efforts of all of the other AR manufacturers and leaves many years unaccounted for.

There's one hell of a lot more than there were when the ban sunsetted.
That's no small part of the gun grabbers problem; a metric shit-ton of ARs have been sold, and  it has become America's Rifle in the years since '04.  People who had no desire for an AR before the ban wanted one when they could get it.

Don't want to make this a 'ban' thread, but talk to your Congresscritters and join the NRA.  We can win this.

There are probably like 20 million ARs out there, but based on the photos I see posted here I bet 4-5 members own them all.

To my understanding, there's no need for boating accidents.  There's no law against selling face to face without any paperwork/ID/nothing.  One could just state that they sold their gun to some guy, didn't catch his name.

How many in private hands, or how many at the bottom of some unexpectedly dangerous lake after boating accidents?

Seriously, I do not expect that even a watered down ban will get any traction in the current political landscape.  I believe that the president had to say some words to quiet some vocal groups in his party so he could get to work on budget and other fiscal issues - which are important to all of us an which CAN be managed with the current makeup of our government,

But... I certainly hope he gets some of his non-legislative points going.  Like getting more states to report to NICS.  It is not "equal representation" for the people in states that do their best to keep NICS up to date when more than half of the states report little or nothing.  And his point about mental health care essentially sucking in our nation is spot on.  Getting NICS to actually work is an enormous step toward getting the antis a big helping of "shut the F up" in my opinion.  And treating mental illness like illness instead of like some demonic possession, might just help reduce the costs to all of us for things like local jails.  The Los Angeles County Jail has the largest population of any institution in the country by several estimates...  Keeping people from becoming a problem for society (starting with reducing the number of people who sit there and talk to nothing at bus stops) could reduce our tax costs for supporting people jailed for being crazy in public.

Millions and millions. Any UK news agency will vastly underestimate the number. If you consider all the ones sold before the 94 ban, then all the ones sold after the ban sunsetted, you're looking at a hell of a lot more than 2 million. Between AR's and AK's combined, you're looking at a number high enough that many 'up there' will think twice about taking them. Especially when they're so very easy to produce.

I don't know about ARs but you could get a pretty good guestimate of AKs by sifting through the landfills and dump sites in your locale.

From the Heller II decision dated November 2011:

We think it clear enough in the record that semi-automatic rifles and magazines holding more than ten rounds are indeed in “common use,” as the plaintiffs contend. Approximately 1.6 million AR-15s alone have been manufactured since 1986, and in 2007 this one popular model accounted for 5.5 percent of all firearms, and 14.4 percent of all rifles, produced in the U.S. for the domestic market.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I've read the decision many times over. What I meant was that the ruling didn't cite a source for the 1.6 million AR-15s manufactured since 1986 figure.

I suspect that if they decide that currently legal firearms need to confiscated, the number they collect will be far smaller than they imagine. Noncompliance with a turn in doesn't take any active participation to participate, you simply do nothing. If one is paranoid about being caught very simple and easy measures would allow one to remain noncompliant and greatly reduce the risk of detection.

Fortunately the left has been beating us over the head with gunshow loophole nonsense for years, giving each and every one of us an entirely plausible excuse for noncompliance. If one sold their guns via the gunshow loophole then they would no longer have them, and have no way to know where they went or who they were sold to.
