I happened to run across a news article that listed the names of US service men and several women who have fallen since the war began. By count, as of August 7, 2002, 33 have been killed since deployment in Oct of 2001. This is not very many when one considers the losses of the Taliban and other forces. None-the-less it struck me while reading the names that while it is a terrible thing to be an innocent victim of the terrorism that occured on 9/11. It is an entirely different thing to volunteer to serve one's country and to go deliberately in harms way. It is one hell of an heroic thing to do. I know many more are likely to be killed in Afganistan and perhaps Iraq, but please take a minute sometime during your day to remember those who have already paid the ultimate price. |
