| Lots of greek family owned places here. Most have them. Some good, others are OK. I've read that the gyro cooker thingies are only made by two companies, and the same for the meat on the spindle. Not sure if that's true, but the meat seems much the same everywhere. The tzatziki, veggies, and bread are the variables, and also the portions. Some add tomatoes and olives. |

Quoted: It's difficult to find decent ones around here. There used to be a bar owned by an old Greek guy down the road from where I once worked. He always had a spit of meat cooking for the lunch crowd. Good stuff. None of that ground, smeat type crap from Sysco. Istanbul Cafe downtown Cincinnati had the best Gyros while I was there many months ago. |

...they are incredible I haven't had a gyro in months, then today on the way home from the range I heard a guy on the radio talking about a new place in town and I got the craving. I went and got myself one with what was probably some of the best lamb I've ever had on it. It wasn't prettiest, but damn was it good http://i50.tinypic.com/2qm0tj9.jpg Anyone else love the Greek goodness that is a gyro? When I am in a city (Philly or NYC) I always get a gyro, especially if I am drunk. Gyros actually turned me on to something else though. It is called "Shwarma" if you have around you. Same concept, but the lamb is not as processed as a gyro, and it comes with tahini instead of tsuvlaki (sp?) sauce. But both sandwiches are meat pocket/hand heaven goodness. |
