| Hey guys I am currently deployed to Afghanistan on a PSD contract, however I got lucky and scored a new RRA LAR 8 Eliete Operator from my LGS back home in Indiana for pre panic pricing. The problem that I am having is that I have had no luck finding good FAL mags to feed it, if anyone comes across a site that has them in stock could you please let me know. I'm really looking forward to coming home on leave and putting some rounds through it. Thank you guys for any help you can give, stay strong in the fight, and god bless! |

Before the panic buying I got some new 30 rounders from AIM Surplus for my LAR-8. They are built well. That big honking magazine sticking out of the gun looks perfectly obnoxious.
Of course, they're out of stock now. There are also 25 rounders (out of stock too). |

I haven't shot them yet but looked them over good and chambered the first round on one smoothly. They also drop free and fit the mag well good. Metric pattern. The DSA were pretty much all you could find in new metal mags anyway before the panic. I bought some of the last inch pattern mags out there just after I got the gun. |
| Thanks for all of the quick responses, you are right that my timing sucks but this rifle kind of just fell into my lap and I couldn’t say no to the deal. Seems like that is what always happens, I have ample supply of mags and ammo for all of my other weapons, now I am on the search again to feed this new addition to the family. I am looking to buy 5-8 magazines, and I thank you guys for the advice about sticking with the 20 round mags. I guess I never really thought about how far they would extend out of the bottom of the weapon. I think that I will place a few on back order through Brownells, but if anyone has some for sale maybe we could work something out! |

I have a mix of DSA and a few other surplus mags myself, and they all seem to function just the same. I really wasn't hungry for 30rd magazines for my FAL - the 20 round seem to be plenty. Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info After I posted that, I seemed to remember that maybe I did shoot one of the 30 rounders the last time I took the gun out and it worked perfectly. The DSA mags appear to be of the same construction as the metric steel 20 rounder that was supplied with the gun, except for the finish, and the fact that the DSA mags appear to be a little straighter and feed a little smoother. The 20 rounder that came with the gun really chews up the brass. Works 100% though. I think RRA has changed the magwell dimensions a couple of times on the LAR-8. Mine seems to have lucked out with the old surplus inch pattern mags -- they fit perfectly, feed smoothly and drop free. Just look like they've seen duty in the Rhodesian army or something. |

I've got some of the Brit .308 Bren/FAL mags, and some South African I think (or possibly Argie, I need to re-examine them) 30 round straight FAL mags...other than having for collecting purposes, they are pretty much useless. The Brit .308 mags are designed to be fed from an upside-down position so the springs are sorta weak, and the SA mags are just too tall to be of any use if you're in any other position than standing.
Buy a pile of 20 round mags..they look better, feed better, and won't suck as much long-term as shooter items. Maybe not as collectable...but a lot more useful. |
