Patent Granted for Digital Camera Mounted on Gun A patent has been granted for a “fully integrated compact digital camera” mounted on a telescopic scope, or on a sight on a handgun, that automatically snaps a photograph of the target when the trigger on the gun is pulled. The camera takes photographs at the rate of 30 frames per second, which are stored in the digital memory. The designer, Terry Gordon of New York, cited the digital image as being useful to target shooters and hunters, as well as to law enforcement agencies investigating contested facts of a shooting. The digital camera is detachable from the gun and can be used as a regular digital camera. |

Quoted: Solid state cameras are rugged enough to install on rockets and missles ... a .45 ought to be tame. I have no doubt that the electronics can handle the recoil, but the muzzle flash will blind the camera, and unless the gun is fastened down the recoil will have you taking a picture above your target. Edited for spelling |

my brother built a metal housing to put a sony 8mm video cam in and then mounted it under the barrel of his paintball gun, its kinda neat to watch paintball competition at home. thought about doing it to a real gun, but afraid the recoil might hurt the electronics |
| I know of at least one company that has a set-up like this for a NV attachment for police sniper scopes; of course it oughtto have some bells and whistles like that- the system is about $25K. I think that gun cameras on police duty weapons (and maybe even personal self-defense handguns) are probably inevitable. Give it 10-15 years, it will be common, in 20-30, it will be mandatory. |

I’ve heard of, but never seen, video setups going through the scope of a sniper rifle and being used during training (don’t know if they’re used during live fire, though). It doesn’t matter if the recoil or muzzle flash messes up some of the pictures, the important pictures are of what was happening before or as the trigger was pulled! I believe the military is also looking at somewhat similar systems that will let commanders see what is going on through video cameras mounted on each soldier’s rifle. |
