I was stationed at N. S. Pearl Harbor when the first shot was fired, I was very confused because it seemed like my favorite Cola was at war with itself. I horded cases of the old coke, I bought them at the Navy Exchange and Commissary to go with my rum. The new Coke that was suppose to taste like Pepsi, nope it did not, I had an uncle that drove the Pepsi truck for years. Yes, I had drifted to the far side when it was free, but when real party time came down to it I was hooked on the real thing.
Those pretty sisters from WWII singing the Rum and Coke a Cola song sold me on the whole idea. The only thing I ever drank without coke was Wild Turkey 101 on top of two ice cubes. When I was stationed at NAS Brunswick, ME in VP-26 in February of 1977 we went on detachment to NAS Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rica to do all our live weapons shots and training. Well, they closed the weapons range and much to the surprise of the anti-Navy, tree hugging democrat liberal governor of the commonwealth, when they closed the live fire range, the Navy closed the base. Yep we came out about even there. The Cola war was strong then, but the real one was still tops. However, the new Coke diversion was the extra secret weapon when even our leaders fooled us. They dumped the real sugar for the corn syrup for a sweetener and screwed the cola taste for ever. Some times at Home Depot they have Mexican Coke with real sugar and that takes me back to the old days. Alas as an old veteran of the cola wars, they now say I am Type II must be from the Agent Orange cola, and I can only do the Zero thing now. I deathly fought the war in Japan, Australia, Bermuda, Puerto Rica, Barbados, Ascension Island, Djibouti, Oman, Diego Garcia, Australia, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, Portugal, Spain and other little Island stops and back home. I gave it my best; I tried to save us from all the hazards of Virgin Island rum and Coke. I threw myself on that grenade and consumed as much as I could so it would not poison those back in the homeland. Alas, my whole plan is a failure, seems both sides of the cola war have more diverse products, they have captured all their smaller allies and imports from VI and PR overwhelm us. I did my best, sorry I failed you, please forgive me. |
