[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Really Walmart?!? (Page 1 of 2)

So on the way back to Austin from Waco today, I decided to start calling around and see what ammo I could find in stock. I found two places with 2.23, and none with 5.56. Everywhere else was completely sold out.

First, Red's had some. Catch? They don't allow you to purchase it and leave. It's for range use only. Fail.

Last hope, Walmart. The call took over 20 minutes, which was annoying, however the manager (who's name I didn't think to get) found a single 20 round box of brass case 2.23's in the cabinet (for $15.95). I was about 3 hours from being able to go there, so after nicely requesting, he agreed to hold it for me and took my name, then told me it would be in spring goods. I get there 2.5 hours later to pick it up and, dun dun dun... it's sold. Really!?!     ugh

F'n Walmart...

......................

ETA:

Let me clarify.

I was on my way back to my home area already. This Walmart is local to where I live, but it was going to take me approx. 2.5-3 hours before I could be there to pick it up. That's why I asked him to hold it for me. I was NOT driving 3 hours to get a single box of ammo... Also, my frustration was not in that they didn't have the ammo, it was that I was told one thing, and they did another. If he couldn't hold it,  no biggie, just say that. But don't tell me it's fine and take my name, then turn around and sell it elsewhere...

Also, pardon my mistype on the .223, it was a long night.

As for not having other ammo, sure, my bad. I have one magazine filled most of the way with some steel case stuff a friend bought when he had my rifle. I recently got it back, but had some other financial priorities and couldn't run out and buy ammo. In the mean time, everyone panicked and bought up all the local ammo in stores, so now that I want to go buy a few boxes, there isn't any to be found. So yes, when I found Walmart had a box, and it was local, I didn't see the harm in buying it. Is that really so illogical? My apologies for not being able to afford to drop a couple of hundred dollars on cases online...

I would've never called walmart expecting them to hold ammo for me in the first place.

Always try Academy before Wal Mart around here (Austin).

I wouldn't drive 3 hours for a $850 Bushy right now, let alone a single, solitary box of ammo.

Just curious, if you happen to know.. I was born and raised in Waco and there were two excellent gun shops when I was growing up.

Do you know at all if Cogdell's is still open? I know they either closed or moved, but that was one of the best stores I've ever been in in my life. If they're still open in Waco I'd say to go in there. Wonderful place.

Last time I was in a Walmart the nice lady at the gun counter told me that Walmart was going to stop carrying those terrible assault rifles that no one needs anyway. She was sure about it. The nice man at the gun counter asked her where she heard that because he hadn't heard such a thing. (Both the nice lady and the nice man were Walmart employees.)

Answer: She heard it on CNN.

$15/ 20 round box of ammo isn't worth my time or money.

Assuming your car gets a respectable average of 20 miles to the gallon, and assuming you drove at an average of 50 miles per hour, you're saying you drove 300 miles round trip, paying $52.50 in gas money so you could overpay for a single box of hunting .223 from a distant Wal-Mart three times farther away than I've ever seen two Wal-Marts apart from one another in my life?

Bull.  Shit.

Who in their right mind has an AR or any gun for that matter and no ammo?

I have been making a killing the last couple weeks selling odd and end crap ammo I couldn't give away a couple months ago at more than premium prices to folks like that.

I sold some old Junior steel case .22 for $5 a box.

Are you the guy I keep seeing on backpage with an ad like this:

9mm: 17 rounds FMJ

.223: 7 rounds
12ga: 1 cartridge

Do this: Walk in, buy as much 223 as you want, take a step in to the range, turn around, and walk out. What, are they going to try to stop you?

Fuck that.

I did read your post and as you said it's on your way home but I wouldn't even stop if all's they had was a single box of .223's. By your sign in I see you've been here for a few years and must have been on the roller coaster before.so it boggles my mind that not only yourself but so many others on ARF-COM haven't any ammunition at all or none to speak of. Best I can say is when and if it settles, try and buy a box or two extra a week, don't dip into it and save them for a rainy day. If you don't already, reloading is a great way to save those factories and also cut costs on your range day.

Not as a rub-your-nose-in-it but here's one of my cabinets, It's one that is attached to my reloading bench so there's other things in it besides ammunition. Just on the doors there's like 600 45's, maybe 350 or so 7.62 soviets and about 8,000 .22's. This one is just extra pick-ups over the years. Grab a few here and there when I could get a decent deal.

AR's and AK's are just one facet. I too like bolts. If the picture was clearer you'd see this cabinet is a mixed bag of calibers. The little jars on the right are for the case length gauges that I do reload for. There are a few that I don't but I get into all types of actions and styles. Semis, bolts, levers, pumps, revolvers (modern and western), pistols. They are all good to me.

I hand load for a Rem. 700 SPS varmint in .308, I have owned many guns and sold many guns. My brother bought a Bushy M4 Patrolman from the local last year, once I touched it I was hooked. But I have bought many impulse firearms before and learned to think things through. So I did my research and decided on a RRA Mid build. Right about the time I get money together to order Obumer rd 2. I have got the Idea reloading = bulk and quality for cheap, as I have around 800 rds for my .308 and started buying my 5.56 components (before I built the rifle) I got the idea just a little late.

ETA. I have never owned a pistol, however the wife and I are getting CCW permed and for her a Glock 9mm she's not sure on frame size, and myself (being a 1911 fan) a Kimber Pro Carry 2 soon.
