That's one of those stories I wish was true, but figured it wouldn't be.

In 2009 my youngest son moved from Michigan to Wyoming for better opportunities.

That fall my oldest son & his wife (from FL) along me & their mom all got together in late September for an Antelope hunt.  We were easterners & weren't familiar with the way it's done out there.  IE: ride around in the truck until you find speed goats the drive close enough to shoot one. Nah, we thought you were supposed to hunt/stalk them.  Both sons are very good over a rifle so we figured we'd have to make 400yd shots.

We spotted a herd of doe at about a mile so we carefully worked our way toward them, walking & using what little cover was available in the open desert that is SW WY.  We were still about 1/2 mile away & they had eyeballs on us but weren't spooked.

There wasn't enough cover between our position & the goats so I told the boys I'd stay put and only move around a bit to keep their attention focused on me.  Meanwhile the boys worked along a rock ridge off to our left to shorten their shots.  I would stand up in plain sight of the Antelope every 5 minutes or so and flank them to the right away from where the boys were moving.

The plan was working. The goats were paying attention to me and what I was doing.  After about 20 minutes I'm thinking to myself, they should within range.  Just then I heard the crack of younger son's .243 Super Rock Chucker & see a doe tip over.

Older son made his shot at 385yds.

Older son on left, younger on the right.

Just got word yesterday from younger son,  he dropped an elk at 517yds.

His words:  "My shooting position.  Just slightly lower and to the left of my muzzle
is a small snow patch.  That is where the cow was standing when I took
the shot."

That rifle is a custom built 300wsm he uses for LONG range shooting.  He recently put 4 shots on target at 2163yds. (PM if you'd like a link to that story)
