When I put my bin of glass, paper, and plastic together and the truck picks it up every week..what happens after that?

Does it get dumped out in a big pile and have to be sorted through? Is it really someone's job to hand sort through all that garbage? Or is there some kind of machine that can separate glass from paper and plastic? What happens to the stuff after that? Do private companies buy the old material from Waste Management?

Here it is sorted into different bins on the truck right there curbside.

On an episode of Dirty Jobs, they had the recycling put on conveyor belts, run under a strong magnet to grab ferrous metals, then the belt would travel by people grabbing stuff off for hand sorting.

Gets sorted and sold. The local solid waste site used to have a page about how much they've made off recyclables, but its not there anymore.

That's a nice attitude to have. I don't understand why so many people don't care about recycling. Resources are finite and all of us should care about reusing what we can when we can.

not if you have single stream recycling.

it gets sorted.   some by magnets,  some by people,  some by the machine with high speed camera and air.   then it all gets sold to China.
