Heads up folks. I just got a call from an "out of area" caller claiming that my computer had unwanted files downloaded to it. I spent the last 20 minutes mind fucking this guy on the phone as he was "walking" me through how to determine if my computer had these files. What he was suggesting would have given him or anyone else free access to my system. The guy sounded like he was from India or another similar nation. Be aware that this is a scam and do not do what they ask you to do if you get a call from them.
I could not understand what company he claimed to be from. His accent was bad. Just be forewarned about this scam! |

They've been running that for quite a while. I believe there's some funny stories out there about people stringing them along for hours.
ETA - Don't mean to discount your alert, the more people are aware of potential scams the better. They wouldn't do this shit if people didn't fall for it at one point or another. |

Just be forewarned about this scam! You are da man! I'm glad that you knew what you were doing!!! When I have the time, I love messing with rude telemarketers. My favorite is to act like I'm listening, grunt, say "heck, I don't remember eating corn..", and then flush the toilet. |

Quoted: Dammit.Wait, you're telling me that if someone calls me on the phone out of the blue, and tells me that I have spyware on my personal computer, but that he can walk me through the process of deleting it...he might not be legit Speed I should have read this thread earlier this morning. |

they got my mother inlaw the first time for 298.00 then came back for 698.00 to fix the virus and key logger they put on her machine the first time. they claimed to be from Microsoft and had spoofed the caller ID. I had my MIL forward her phone to my cell while I called the local PD for the crimes against the elderly division, they said a lot of senior citizens had been caught in that scam and they were working with a Ca PD to stop it. anyway the scammer was relentless and did not care that she had me on the phone. I wound up getting a call from her bank warning me about the scam and they had stopped payment to that company |

Quoted: Don't answer unknown numbers. They'll leave a voicemail if it's important. Many problems solved this way. This. I NEVER answer calls from unfamiliar numbers. Ninety percent of them don't leave a message. Saves a lot of time. Why should I talk to every idiot who calls me? Most are illegal sales calls. Fuck them. |

I love those random calls that try to phish or scam. I tie them up for as long as I can. Or till the wife gets tired of my random silliness and tells me to take it to another room. Or the basement.
If it's the basement, that's when the fun really starts. I have chains that I rattle and old Halloween tapes of people screaming. That will get the caller to shut up and ask what is that. I tell them its a hooker I've had tied up for the last 3 years. They usually hang up. I love random callers. |

One called my aunt a few months ago. I hadn't heard of this scam yet, but red flags were going off left and right in my head after she described the call. A quick Google search confirmed the scam. Luckily, she told them she'd check with me and have me call them back, since I am the one in the family who "knows computers." Good on her. One of the main reasons I cut the cord and no longer have a landline at all. Many, many fewer junk calls. |
