A new laptop I've purchased, but have yet to use (Christmas present for the wife and I, first laptop EVAR!!!!111) has it installed on it and I'm kind of scared. I use XP right now and I just don't know. Obviously, I'll need to use it before I can judge for myself, but should I be thinking about trashing it and going with Linux or something? And no, I'm not even close to a programming type of guy. What are your thoughts on it? It is not a touch screen either.

If you don't like it just run 7. 7 is win. When it comes to Windows.

It isn't bad once you get used to it. Once used to it, it is actually pretty good.

I have been using it since it was first released as a Beta, and disliked it at first, but came to like it pretty quickly.

this. like when the start button and taskbar showed up in 95, you'll get used to it.  makes more sense with a touchscreen, though.

I have a feeling I'll like it once I get used to it. Am I still going to want to use my SUPERAntiSpyware and ZoneAlarm and all that? Using Firefox just gets shittier and shittier. It's getting so bloated these days...

How would I go about getting 7 installed if I didn't like it?

Yes, about four weeks on a new Lenovo....Windows 8 is just fine...no issues.
There will be na sayers....but hell, I still miss "Windows" from about 1991'ish

SUPER AntiSpyware sucks. Haven't used it for years.

Get Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, ESET scanner, and Spybot.

I like what I see with Windows 8 having used it a little. The new laptops combining traditional keyboard with touch-screen monitor are simply sublime. Not even Apple is doing that, and I'm a huge Apple fanboy.

That is because Apple is right and MS is wrong on this one.

For my desktop (and laptop if I get one) I want to use a keyboard and mouse. It is far quicker to type, and my arm isn't blocking my screen nor is it smudging it. The desktop mode is nice, but it looks damn ugly and you still have to go into Metro every now and then. Which is the worst part - switching between the two modes. I think most people agree that a keyboard is a must if you want to do anything productive. The majority of tablets I see being used these days have addon keyboards and stands to make it like a laptop. In the end they end up costing the same yet are slower and less capable.

I've used the iPad for a few hours and it is a nice luxury item for showing people crap on youtube, but that is about it. When it comes time to do real work I need a laptop or desktop.

You'll get used to it incredibly fast, at which point it becomes a somewhat different and mildly faster Win7, if you want it to.

P.S. Windows key to flip between desktop and metro. Really, it ain't rocket science.

Nothing is as intuitive as touching the screen when I want to select something, though typing on a virtual keyboard feels unnatural to me. It's more novel than anything (I'm on my iPad right now). In this regard, I love the new PC laptops because I have the best of both worlds. I might even make the argument that reaching out and touching the screen is more forgiving on your wrists than constantly operating a mouse, but I have no empirical evidence to support that.

Anything that drives technology forward is a good thing,

That is the part I don't like. I also hate smudges on my screen, especially if I am watching a movie or similar. If I had the money I'd have a  tablet to as I did like the iPad for recreational tasks, but I don't see much utility in it.

Long story short: I just spent $100 to go BACK to Win 7 from WIN 8!!!   OK, its good for a laptop and esp for a touch screen but for me, an old, cranky long time desk top WIN user it sucked, picture a windows based cell phone, and that pretty much sums it up MS decided its time to make your old programs, now their  APPS and move everything from your desktop pc to "cloud" based, heck you can't even download a copy of MS outlook express anymore. IMHO, MS wants to be just like Apple. WIN 7 is the end of the Bill Gates $ ride with me, their will be NO more OS's on my pc after WIN7.  Avoid like a the plague, IMHO, YMMV

PS-Best $100 I ever spent going back too. (Until I convert to Apple)

Outlook Express was replaced a while ago by Windows Mail, which Windows 8 has.

I love Win8.
I upgraded all my computers to it at $15 a pop.

You can use classic shell to make it like win7 or winXP for that matter.

That happened with Vista, IIRC.

It stilll left a lot of casual users dumped in the dirt.

I see Win 8 doing the like.  The folks who used and knew how MS did things now have to learn from scratch.

MS did something like this with Office.

Want to edit an email you received in Outlook?  Where would you find that checkbox?  Under "Edit"?  Nope.  Not even close.

But this new interface is just what we all wanted.  I guess.  Even though the whole thing has gone through an apple cart turnover.

Win 8 doesn't really promise me much in terms of knowing what I'm doing without having to look it up.

That's just my take, though.  It's worth what you paid.

I love Win8.

And the person who said being able to touch the screen is handy is right.  After using my surface I can't wait to upgrade all my W8 devices to touch.  In fact if your laptop isn't touch enabled, you might want to reconsider for a touch option.  The MS store has an acer with touch for $500.

I'm testing 8 on my work laptop.  It's just about useless in stock form.  I installed the free Pokki start menu replacement, disabled the "hot corners", and it's now basically Windows 7.

It is sad when 50% of the users are getting task bar like applications from 3rd party sources.

I went from XP to Win 8 and hated it! I installed Windows Classic Shell and the world is right-side up now.

Seriously, give Classic Shell a look, you'll feel like you never left XP!

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago.

The only reason Windows 8 exists is to force people to use the new Microsoft App Store so they can sell more Windows phones and tablets.
