After careful consideration, i have decided to get a desktop instead of a laptop.

I have also decided to go with a Dell Dimension 8200.  I previously owned an Inspiron that i had several problems out of and am glad i am not using it anymore.

Dells tech support and ease of building a computer on thier site, is why i am a returning customer.

Great site and agtm is right -- Look into building your own.
Last month I built my own for my 49th birthday present. (And got cable Internet – WooHoo!!)   For just over half the price of a top ready-made system I got:

Case w/2 fans and 350watt AMD certified power supply
AMD Athlon XP1700
1 Gigabyte of DDR2100 RAM
128-bit video card w/32 Meg of RAM and SIS 305 chipset
100Gigabyte 7200RPM Hard Drive
CD/DVD
CD Burner (from old machine)
32 Meg SoundBlaster
US Robotics modem
Speakers w/external power and subwoofer
Keyboard, A Drive, NIC and 5 button optical mouse
OEM license for XP

I’ll be upgrading the video card later and the motherboard will take the current Athlon XP 2600 and probably future Athlons for a generation past what I have.

I used my current 17” Mitsubishi monitor.

It took some time, but I learned a lot.

The biggest problem I faced was my own trepidation.   I had a friend more knowledgeable in hardware than I am as a back up and for moral support.   His encouragement helped a lot. (Thanks, Mike.)
