| anyone do it much,Ihave decided to fast 3 days just to see if I can |
|
The the OP: It's bad for you. Just diet instead. Or do a minimal work out. Why not start calorie counting? There are many websites that do it for you for free, if you have a smart phone they even have free aps that do it. The best one is "My Fitness Pal". You don't even have to eat shitty diet foods if you count calories. 40 push ups and 40 situps a day can be done by ANYONE and it makes a world of difference. Just break it up into sets if you have to. |
|
I did nothing but juice and water for a week after I broke my jaw (wired shut)
I had a tooth that hadn't grown in all the way that left about a 5mm gap, so I eventually moved on to eating Easy Cheese and also filled up icing bags with mashed potatoes and squirted them in there. It sucked. I was so hungry I would chug three warmed up cans of beef broth just to get a taste of meat. I was 135 lbs at 5'6" when I started and lost 20-25 lbs in 6 months. |
|
I fast every day. I may break my fast in the morning ("breakfast" gee wonder where that word derived from?) but more commonly I break it at late lunch. That could be dinner or I may yet have a supper and begin my fast again.
Longer termed fasts I have done, no problem. Usually something else was involved but it's just a mental switch. Your body does not "NEED" food, however it'd like to sustain healthy levels. |
|
Since I've been strictly eating primal I could probably fast for 3 days just fine ( I tend to do a 36 hr fast once a week and don't get hungry)
Before eating primal I couldn't go one day without eating without getting very irritable, tired, and have a massive headache. What do you hope to gain from the fast? |
|
when i was a teen, i fasted for a month to cleanse my body and see if i had the discipline and will. just drank lots of water. freaked my mom the fuck out, she thought i was gonna die.
from what i understand, fasting isn't good for losing weight cuz your body goes into famine mode and will store the fat and start eating muscle along with fat, something like that. if you're tying to lose weight, i mean. |

Thats pretty much what it did to me. I lost most of my muscle mass. |

I only eat from noon to 8 pm everyday practicing intermittent fasting. It is the shit This. I love intermittent fasting. There are a lot of common misconceptions about fasting that Martin Berkhan does a good job of clearing up. http://www.leangains.com/ |

Not even close. There is no such thing as "famine mode." Your body diverts nutrients to the more critical functions such as operation of organs. Muscle waste is through atrophy. Your body does not consume muscle. Fasting should improve functions in the short term as the body requires energy. Once your body uses the carbohydrates it taps the fat cells. There's a bit of play with the pancreas and hormones. |

i fast everyday. I eat between noon and 8pm. i don't snack after 8pm, and don't eat again til noon the next day. in the last 8 months, using intermittent fasting and a reduced calorie low carb diet (1800kcal per day, less than 70g carbs) I've lost 72lbs. I'll regularly practice a 24h fast once a week, usually tuesday into wednesday. I eat a big lunch tuesday, practice judo tuesday night so no dinner, then don't eat til lunch the next day. this week i went from tuesday afternoon til wednesday night around 6, so roughly a 28h fast. Not hard to do once you've gotten past the mental "hunger" that you think you feel.
For anyone who's unfamiliar with intermittent fasting, here's a link to a bit of a guide on Art of Manliness that goes over the basics. Also, check out Lean Gains for more intermittent fasting tips. OP, anything longer than 72h without caloric intake is not healthy. Also, anyone who says they've fasted by just drinking water and juice... that's not a fast. Juice is full of sugar, thus calories. Not a fast with caloric intake. This was me in January, at 340lbs roughly, size 48 waist:
And this is me last week, in a size 40, at 263lbs:
IF is a great way to burn bodyfat, which is really what you want to do. I'm not as concerned with losing weight as I am concerned with lowering my body fat percentage, which I clearly have done. |

With this noon to 8 thing that I've never heard of before - A few years ago I started doing that just because I'm lazy, didn't want to get up early to get breakfast and dinner schedule was out of sync with the kids (they eat about 3 so aren't hungry at 6 when I was). I usually eat only one meal a day but if I do eat anything else it's in the afternoon ... 3:00 and I'm now eating for the first time since 5:30 yesterday. I've lost 40lbs in 3 years without changing anything else (except that I can't eat as much at a sitting as I used to), could that be why? If anything, I exercise less than I did before I started losing weight.

You can still drink beer, right? during the fast? nein. carbs and whatnot... now, liquor? since liquor doesn't contain the three macros (carbs, fat, protein) i don't consider it ingested calories... fuck yea. whiskys and diet cokes all night. Ethanol more or less is metabolized very quickly into sugar. Which is obviously a carbohydrate. |

I have fasted for three days, no food, no water. When I do fast, though, it is for religious reasons and not health. Going for long periods for the purpose of losing weight doesn't work well in the long run. ETA: Long periods I would consider over 24-36hrs, for the purpose of losing weight. If you are going to fast, know why and what your goals are (this applies to IF as well as religious fasts). |

| It's difficult and really unhealthy, did it to see how long I could stretch some supplies. Basically an MRE sized meal every 3 days is my max, after that I start to get wonky...dizzy, mentally unclear, slow to react. That's with some moderate physical activity. |
|
Quoted: Quoted: Fasting is retarded. Then I guess you're retarded all night whilst you sleep. If the OP or anyone in this thread was talking about an 8 hour sleep cycle while your food is still digesting that would be a great zinger. Now, I'm off to the sweat lodge where some power crystals will detoxify my chakra. |

Low to no carb, high protein, moderate fats, lots of veggies. within 3-4 days you'll drop 5-10 lbs of water and waste. |

My old man on the other hand, decide it was time to get back to his days of youth, and went from 245 to 205, and he is 6"2. He looks great. He pretty much follows eat to live, and now that he is lighter he is training for an Iron Man. It has worked great for him and my mother, who was never a large woman 5"1 and probably 140 at the heaviest, but now she is tiny and in good shape as well. |
