the dimple is to get a uniform spread of priming compound on the rim of the case. Eley used it too for a while.. This, shock sensitive priming mix needs to get into the rim to get crushed by the pin. The dimple was there so that priming mix got a better distribution to where it would be effective and consistent. I wish federal still made a target quality .22 rf ammo. That stuff was the shit. They dropped it as it wasn't profitable. IIRC we one a few medals with that stuff in the olympics. ETA1 - rjbergen, the pic makes it kind of look like cf ammo. It's not, just a dimple in the middle of the case head that resembles a cf primer at a glance. ETA2 - I remember when we had a lots of that stuff on the shelf at the gunshop where I worked when i was in college. Not for nothing but I probably wouldn't trust old old rimfire ammo to still be match quality in shooting. CMP sold some eley match where the wax melted off the bullets and pooled in the bottom of the box. Reports of it shooting worse than thunderbolts were abundant. The lube is a very key component in match ammo. Good storage is paramount. |
