this may sound strange, but in PNW its always been saltines given when one ordered Clam Chowder. Only in the last few years have i seen the appearence of Oyster Crackers.
So which one is correct when one has Clam Chowder?? I have heard that Oyster Crackers are East Coast thing. Is this correct? |

Crushed saltines.
"Oyster Crackers" are the enteric-coated pills of the cracker world. They don't get involved with the chowder, soaking in none of its awesomeness. They just float on its surface, like life rafts from a sunken ship - Hating their predicament, and wishing for nothing other than prompt rescue. |

I don't know if it's an east coast or New Englander thing, but oyster crackers are commonly provided along withn your NE Clam Chowder. Saltines are an option if you run out of oyster crackers (aka oysterettes). Sometimes the extra salt on the Saltines make the chowder too salty. Oysterettes usually have little or no salt.
But for the purist, Common Crackers are what accompany NE Clam Chowder. |
