Do you think that people should be able to carry handguns without having to get a permission slip from the government, or is licensing a common sense measure which limits the number of criminals and unstable people carrying firearms?

Constitutional Carry.

You should have to prove you are incapable of carrying a gun to be forbidden from carrying one.
11/15/2012 7:50:01 AM EDT
[#13]
I believe in personal responsibility. Shoot yourself, it's on you. Shoot someone you shouldn't, it's on you.

More people would carry if there was no CCW required. Many of them shouldn't because they are dumbasses, but I err on the side of freedom ALWAYS.

Hate to break it to you guys, but some of the Fudds at the range have their fucking CCW! I've had them in classes and personally unfucked many, many of them.

Move up here to Alaska. We need no permits.

CCW permits are Jim Crow inventions.

It's a total shame how it's OK to require people to get a license and pay a fee to exercise 1 constitutional right but it's not OK to ID people to make sure they have another right that's not even spelled out in the constitution.

I did. Not because I believe in gun control, but you learn a lot about the law regarding the use of deadly force. I say give anyone and everyone a permit, but make them learn a few things about the responsibility of carrying first.
11/15/2012 8:00:54 AM EDT
[#17]
First, what is the point of a question like this on a board like this? Exactly what answers do you think you should get?

Second, no, because carrying a gun is a Constitutional right, unlike driving a car. Beyond not allowing criminals and mentally ill to have guns, laws should be taken with extreme skepticism.

However, I do believe that proper gun handling should be taught in schools. Not even necessarily firing a gun, but simply classes that cover what to do if you come across one. Practical application can be done with handgun trainer models. They could even be rigged with pressure sensitive triggers that light when the trigger is maniuplated. At least this way, no one can say they had not idea what to do with a gun that they came across.

How is having to pass a class to carry infringing on a persons right to own a gun?

Wouldn't having people take the class actually support the whole "well regulated" part!? by teaching them about firearms

How is having to pass a class infringing on a persons right to own a gun?

Two reasons:

1) If you believe the RKBA is a natural right, then you believe that having to "ask permission" to carry is an infringement of that right.

2) On a more practical level, a test can be made so difficult that no one can pass, and become a de facto ban on CCW.

I would rather have someone who seeks out the training themselves rather than sinking down to the government mandated minimum.

I never took a class for my CCW, and yet, I have had plenty of training with handguns... funny how that works.

Well, good. I guess your heart is in the right place, but I politely suggest that you take these arguments in stride, think it over some more. You'll see that I'm right.

I know people can get defensive having to back up their own words in an argument, but seriously the state of california INFRINGES on the rights of its citizens to carry a pistol for self defense. They do that by "legalizing" CCW and making it impossibly hard to get. It is––as I said earlier–– a de facto ban. No need for tin-foil.
