Ok guys, I have a 3 page problem and solution paper due Thursday on the topic of my choice. For the problem I'm thinking about writing on the misinformation/lies being spread about the 2A...

I need some examples to work on. Carolyn McCarthy's "shoulder thing that goes up"   is one that I'm using, but I need a few more. Any ideas on how to solve this issue? an educated and informed electorate? mandatory gun safety/familiarization in schools?

Thanks guys

research the ratio of automobile related fatalities to (legal) firearm fatalities. Then demand they either drop drivers ed from school or administer gun safety classes as part of the curriculum.

"Gun traffickers have found a new avenue for dealing guns to criminals, to the mentally ill, and the under-aged — the Internet. The firepower available on the Internet is chilling. Machine guns, assault weapons and cheaply made pistols are available in cyberspace for the taking. And they are available to those who could never buy a gun under the Brady law." — U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, March 16, 1999.

"Another rifle caliber, the 30.30 caliber, was responsible for penetrating three officers' armor and killing them in 1993, 1996, and 2002. This ammunition is also capable of puncturing light-armored vehicles, ballistic or armored glass, armored limousines, even a 600-pound safe with 600 pounds of safe armor plating."

"It is outrageous and unconscionable that such ammunition continues to be sold in the United States of America. Armor-piercing ammunition for rifles and assault weapons is virtually unregulated in the United States. A Federal license is not required to sell such ammunition unless firearms are sold as well. Anyone over the age of 18 may purchase this ammunition without a background check. There is no Federal minimum age of possession. Purchases may be made over the counter, by mail order, by fax, by Internet, and there is no Federal requirement that dealers retain sales records." -  Senator Edward Kennedy, New York (February 26, 2004, Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, Congressional Record, (Pp. S1634-5)

"We want sensible gun laws. You don't hunt with M-16s. You blow holes in tanks with those weapons. They were built just to kill people." Reverend Jessie Jackson, as quoted in the Chicago Tribune, 8/7/2007 (Link:  www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-gunshop_07aug07,1,4340418.story?track=rss)

"I think that we should ban so-called junk guns. I think we should ban assault weapons like the weapons used here [in Fort Worth], yes. I think that the kinds of weapons that have no legitimate use for hunting or the kind of weapon that a homeowner would use, I think they should be banned, yes, those kind of weapons." — Al Gore, appearing on Larry King Live, September 17, 1999, commenting on the 1999 Fort Worth shooting. The "assault weapons" being referred to are semi-automatic handguns.

"I've never met a hunter who thought he needed an AK-47 to shoot a deer. I never met a hunter who thought that guns ought to be distributed to criminals. So it seems to me that background checks make sense. Both for gun shows and for retail stores." – Presidential Candidate Howard Dean, "On Board The Dean Machine" Philadelphia Weekly, August 6, 2003, http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/archives/article.asp?ArtID=5972

"Assault weapons have become the weapons of choice for violent criminals, drug dealers, gangs and dangerous maniacs everywhere. They have been used in schoolyards, at airports, in bank lobies, on trains, in traffic and in front of the white house. They have no legitimate sporting purpose..." — Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, during U.S. House Of Representatives debate on repealing the the semi-automatic weapons ban of 1993.

I can't give you any specific examples of stupidity, but I can say that you should make sure to hammer the point that the 2A is ENTIRELY about defending this country from tyranny.

Hmm, thursday huh?
A little too late to read the whole book but Paxton Quigly (spelling?)  wrote a terrific book called "Armed and female"
There is one story in FLA about a rape spree and how everyone was looking to protect themselves.  In responce they opened up license to carry laws.
The police already had a training program to initiate new  handgun owners (as required by law).
But now, they were swamped by the numbers.  They could not keep up with demand.

Of course there was this huge outcry that there will be blood in the streets, women are too emotional to use guns, etc. (fill in the blank) Papers, magazines, talking heads decried this new law expecting a new body count.

That never happened, surprise. What DID happen the day after the state made it easier to carry a gun?
I'll give you one guess.
Crime, especially rape, declined.
Dramatically.
Those women weren't even trained yet.  They didn't have their licenses, thus they didn't have their guns.  Just the idea of an armed woman changed the whole situation.
Seems criminals are not altogether stupid.

For starters, try reading the Heller SCOTUS decision and compare what it says to what the gun control movement still says about the 2nd Amendment.
