A relative of mine has a Garrett Treasure Ace. I forget the particular model number but it's very simple to use. I've found coins, belt buckles and old buttons before with it. He's also got another one that's not so simple. It has a owners manual that is at least two inches thick and it would probaly take a lifetime to master.

Find an older used Fisher machine that was made in Los Banos

A few years ago I bought a Garrett Ace 250 from Kellyco.  Their kit for $212 will successfully get you into detecting without breaking the bank.  It's got to be the hobby's best deal ever.  An excellent way to go for the beginner.

I would add a good set of over-the-ear headphones with volume control.  The Garrett headphones (cat# 14-1603000) for $25.95 work great with the Ace 250 are worth the money.  Kellyco is an outstanding retailer.  You can't go wrong with this set up.

Garrett ACE 250 or Fisher F2.  Both are great beginner machines and are very easy to use.

Even though I have several MD's that cost 4x - 8x more, I grab my Fisher F2 more than any of the others when I want to explore a new site.  It's a great "grab 'n go" detector.

I've been using a 90s vintage White's 5900 (bought it new) with great success. I like it better than the newer detectors because of the manual ground balance. I've found thousands of dollars worth of stuff with it over the years. Gold, silver (coins), and CW relics. Great machine.

Great replies/suggestions already...Depending on $$$ look at Tesoro Cibola.  Lifetime warranty. Excellent. But costs around $350 or so.
If you haven't done it, check out some of the .com MD forums - like this forum, great info & help is available:

I have a Garrett Ace.

It sure does get annoying digging up pull tabs, nails and tin foil though.  It kind of spoils the fun for me.

I use a Garrett Ace 250,

Which ever one you end up getting make sure to get a collection pouch, a shovel, and a plastic sifter scoop.

Garrett Ace 250 user here. I like it, easy to use. I have fun using it around the playgrounds while the kids play. I usually find enough for drink on the way home.
