Update: 1936 Willys 77. I had no idea that the old Willys were 4 lug.

Just working on a Christmas present for my son and he's gonna ask what's it off of. To which I will have to say, hell if I know. So to save me my perch on the pedestal that my son has placed me tell me what you think. It's a 4 lug, stamped steel spokes, about 16.5 in dia, and 3.5 in wide. Could be an old import, something from the 30's, or a wheelbarrow, I really have no idea.

100 internets to the first to ID it.

It's modern whatever it is off of. I bet it is the spare wheel for a fairly new car.

Kinda looks like what's called an artillery wheel. The ones that are on my '29 International look similar, but the 4 lug is what is weird. I'm in for curiosity.

Looks to me like a rim from one of those crappy "donuts" they put in cars today and call it a spare.

Four lug so it can't be that old.
Spare donut wheel I say.

I had an old tire mounted on it. Weathered, cracked and brittle. It's heavy gauge and had a ton of rust. The pic is after sandblasting and paint.

Could be some old import from the 70's, can't really see it being any newer than that.

i think it is a trailer wheel.

exact diameter and width would help alot.

What are you making that requires this wheel?

looks like it has a lot of offset. that with the small width,  i would say its a spare tire.  is it 3.5 from the inside of where the tire bead would seat against the rim?  the only car i know of from the factory that used such a small tire was the vw bug.  iirc it was around 165r15

I hang all my air hoses on an old spoke wheel off a 35 Ford. Kind of doing the same thing again for my son. Found the wheel and the price was right. I just know he'll ask what it's off of. Not trying to match anything.

The width where the bead would seat is only 3". The outside diameter is 18" with the actual bead diameter for a 17" tire. So my initial measurements were a bit off.

I should also add that it was not a tubeless tire. It had an inner tube.

The stamped steel center is riveted to the outer ring, not spot welded.

Thanks all for the inquiring minds.

Any letters or numbers stamped on it?

center to center on opposite holes measurement? might help narrow it down a little.

Wheel?

Unless I'm not seeing the perspective in the pic, it looks like what I would call a wheel cover.

or better yet a hubcap

OK I see you say it is 3"

but looks flat in the pics

That looks like Bob to me.

But it could be Fred, too.  They look very similar to one another.

Riveted tube type..pre 1960 for certain.  16" sounds pre-WWII.  4 lugs is weird.

Look's like a old Subaru rim.  Older brother had one when he was in high school.  Thinking, like early eighty's.

I am by no means an expert, but the dimensions certainly seem right for the thirties, although the design looks fairly modern there were a few companies that had ornate non spoke wheels by then. Some of the European cars would have had similar wheels, maybe a Citroen? I haven't seen a mid thirties Willy's with original wheels on it in years, but I seem to remember seeing some with similar wheels.

The thirties is when the industry moved away from spoked knock offs to lugs nuts and styled steel wheels.

A couple more pics. It's not a hubcap. The lugs are on 5" centers. I also added a pic from the back so you can see the rivets.

My first thought was something from the 30's but the 4 lug threw me off also. I'm betting an early import of some kind. It is very heavy gauge, too heavy for anything modern.

Thanks again for the help.

Could possibly be off of an old manure spreader or similar ag implement. Was the tire a "highway rib" or a "traction" style?

It was an old bias ply highway tire, with an inner tube.

Hubcap is too big. Looks to be 5 lug also. Found this while searching an old Volvo site.

I am going to say its a wheel from the front of an old farm tractor or perhaps an implement.

It's a 1936 Willys 77 wheel.

Posted the question on the H.A.M.B. (I hang out there a little also) and got enough info to narrow it down.

Not worth anything since it was heavily rusted inside the wheel. Works for what I want though.
