We need a technology forum.  Not sure the General forum is the best place for this.

I need some help.
I believe both my sons' computers have their HTTP security settings messed up on their laptops.
Whenever they try to open any page using http://, the page fails to load.  However, they have no issues opening a page using https://.
This happens for ALL websites.
This happens using ALL browsers; we tried IE, Google Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
I can ping all sites from the command line and get responses using HTTP.
I reset their internet security settings to default and it had no effect.

I am at a loss.  Any thoughts?
Thanks

First thing I'd think is malware.

Check the browser and network settings and see if a proxy got set.

(and that is the extent to which I want to think about work related stuff on the weekend!)

sounds like port 443 (https) is working fine, but port 80 (http) is blocked. Check your firewall/router settings.

That would be a good idea...

We do have the Urban Commandos forum.

That's where all the big nerds hang out.

We do have a Technology forum but it's not labeled as such.

There is such a forum:

Possibly malware intercepting all the port 80 stuff. Did your sons install anything like Tor?
You may want to install wireshark and see what happens when you try to browse to a URL.

Check the proxy settings in the browser.  You might have a proxy set for HTTP but not for HTTPS or vice versa.

Also, check to make sure that HTTPS Everywhere (https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere) from the EFF wasn't installed.  I've caught about a dozen people at work that broken their computers like you described.  It's an add-on for Chrome and Firefox that tries (poorly) to use HTTPS instead of HTTP for many web sites.  It's for people that have more paranoia than common sense.z

Thanks, all.
I will give your suggestions a try.
I'll check in on the Urban Commando forum if I have any more difficulties.
