my yard is covered in about two inches of acorns, acorns everywhere, when the wind blows it sounds like rocks on a tin roof.  anyway, i was wondering if anyone here has ever eaten acorns either as nuts or flour? how do you do it? how does it taste? do you have any recipes?

i figured it would be a shame to let them go to waste!

Guess you shouldn't have killed all your squirrels.

First question is what kind. Some Oaks make poop that you couldn't eat after 1700 leachings, others make delicious nuggets of happiness. Pics of the trees with leaves on them would help.

My grandmother told us about making coffee from them, never really researched it.  You must have some fat deer around there.

If you search, you'll find old Indian recipes for acorns. The big problem is getting the tannin out.

Make flour. Use it for bread or pancakes.

You have to prepare them a certain way or they're poisonous.

Koreans make a type of jelly out of acorns.  It's tasty.

My grandmother used to collect acorns in our yard when I was a kid and make it.

If they are a type of white oak than the acorns will have less tannins and be more palatable.  I have a blind free ranging pig that eats acorns and hickory nuts.....it's great, in the fall I don't even have to feed and gives good flavor right before slaughter.

I got one of these:

Picks them up good and fast.

Shit, I think the Indians used to eat Mesquite beans for that matter.  I would think acorns would be a piece of cake.

But I ain't an Indian.

I raked four large wheel barrows full of Red Oak acorns last weekend.

There is probably another two on the lawn now.....
