Would it be a bad idea to make most or all government departments earn their own budgets to operate, and turn a profit?

In a word, yes.

The old US Customs made more money than it cost to run, then they added immigration when it became ICE and it all turned to shit.

DMV fees would skyrocket, and a lot more cops would work traffic.

Why make a profit when you can just steal?

It would put them in competition with the private sector, which is verboten.

Gov would make laws that give them a competive advantage over everyone else. Need proof? Look at the cost of booze in ABC states vs States that issue licenses to private business.

The problem there is that most departments wouldn't have competition. You would have to make their use and services non-mandatory.

The alcohol agency here in Utah has a monopoly on ALL liquor sales and they still managed to lose money! They are supposedly ran as a business. How you manage to lose money when you have a liquor monopoly is way beyond my ability to reason.

If I was Canadian or Mexican, I would be nervous if they required the US DOD to make a profit.

I don't see how selling bagged milk or boiled 1911s would be profitable.

I don't see where making the DoD a for-profit entity could go wrong...

Getting assessed when the street in front of your house needs a pothole fixed doesn't sound fun. Paying your pro rata share of the cost of repaving the street would be positively shocking.

I was thinking what if the BATFE had to run on fees collected. They would actually encourage FFLs and NFA transfers.
What if DOC ran prisons at a profit by putting prisoners to work?

And perhaps folks would hold the pavers accountable for how well/badly the paving gets done and how much it costs.

Unfortunately the stamp fees go to the "general fund".   And we have Bush II to thank for the ITAR crap effectively doubling in cost.    He wanted to make them "self sustaining" so they raised the fees to a cripling amount for most.

Can I hire out an airstrike on a shitty neighbor?

If yes, then I support your proposal and would like to contribute $87 to your campaign fund.
