I'm about to walk into a group interview at REI. Will hilarity ensue? Over/under on how strongly the other interviewees smell of patchoulli?

This should be good...

The one by my house has three or four guys that open carry while out in the woods and all are into black rifles. They probably also carry concealed but I have no way of knowing.

I have a friend that does product R&D for REI.
He loves the Obamessiah, taught in the ghetto of NYC for a few years to give back to society, drives a Subaru (surprisingly, he has a girlfriend) and walked away from a $100+k/yr job to climb mountains for a living.

REI is to hot 20 somethings like Whole Foods is to hot soccer moms.  I'd request an assignment in the yoga pants aisle.

Hey guys, just a quick update, if anybody cares.

It was a group style interview.  They mostly ran us through scenarios and group discussions, I guess to see how well we interact with other people.  If they want to move on with the process, I'll know by the end of next week.

And yes, it's severe underemployment.  $9 an hour to run the register, but, I get 30% off as an employee discount.  Can you say "financial self destruction?"  I'd work for store credit if they'd let me.

Wait untill they teach you about employee "pro deals" and 3point5! It really becomes expensive then.

How old are you and where do you live? REI markup on name brands negate that nice 30% discount. I have a friend that works at L'occitane and she gets a 50% discount, that lets me know the customers are getting bent over if they can offer something huge like that to a measly employee.

I filled out an application for working at REI back in the early 90s, I put them on ignore when I found out they only paid minimum wage.  Everyone else around here paid quite a bit more.

I'm in my mid-20's.  $9 an hour is bullshit money, but they got some hot females shop at that store, and for a 30% cut on merchandise, I'd show up.  Plus, if you can hang, they might make you regular staff.  I'd work there longer term, if offered.  Everybody starts out as a part time chimp at REI and then moves up if you prove you're worth the investment.

And REI isn't out of line as far as pricing goes.  I'm a member, so I get 10% back automatically, basically everything I buy there is tax free, is how I look at it.  Plus, I got their VISA, so I get 5% more back.  Add to that, I can take anything back, whenever, and get a refund or exchange.  I had a bike helmet where the visor came off in a crash.  Took it back, and essentially traded even up for a better one that was currently on sale.  It's totally worth it to me to spend an extra $2 for that privilege.  Then, I can buy it back at the Garage Sale for ten cents on the dollar, if I want to.  Uh, yeah, REI for life.

Why are you walking into a group interview? Jobless yourself? Why do you care what others do for an honest living? Why the fuck are there people here who support what you are saying?

If I was down on my luck and needed a job ASAP, I might apply anywhere that would give me money. WTF is wrong with some people. Bitch that people don't work for their food stamps then bitch when they don't like the place where they earn money to feed a family. That's fucked up OP. Quit trollin. Show some class, or is that asking too much?

For the record, I like REI, especially when they give me 20% off just for being a member, and when I get to go in on member only days where everything is dirt cheap. Go to a gun shop if you want to buy guns. Do you try to buy cars at your auto parts store too?

I think dropping a Beretta + Orvis store in the same locale as each REI shop is a great idea.

In fact, I even sent Orvis a well reasoned letter stating this fact.

I wait patiently by the phone, expecting that they will call me back.

I am serious about it being a sound business model, though.

REI is good to go. I bought a nice pair of boots online and they didn't quite fit me right. I returned them at a store no questions asked and they helped me pick out a pair that fit me a lot better.

My first job in Alaska thirty years ago was with REI. Became pretty skilled moving displays every week or so, to keep the store looking "fresh". I subsisted on oberto sausage sticks purchased with my employee discount..
No hot wimmenz then, unless you liked hairy pits and legs..

At my store, the minimum is 16/wk.  Eight hours weekend, and two four hour shifts during the week.  Right now it's just a Christmas staffing thing.  If I get hired, I'd stay full time if they'd let me.

My understanding is that it isn't. Some occupiers asked on the REI forum and the response was not particularly positive. Some people claimed that REI and patagonia were supporting OWS. REI was pretty strong with their denial.
