No, not what you're thinking...
Can someone explain to me when, where, and why someone apparently decided to create an entirely new meaning for the word "optics"? I'd give the definition of this new usage, except that there's not a single explanation I can find anywhere that seems to explain this new context. As an example from a recent link: We had been knocked completely off message, the optics were horrible, and our favorability ratings were collapsing at a crucial moment. (It seems like an ice-age ago when such trivialities actually mattered to me.)
"The optics were horrible" is a sentence that ought to refer to a problem regarding pieces of ground glass and their associated housings. It is not a word that has any casual relationship with television ratings. Where the hell did this mess come from? |
