Anyone here fly model rockets?

I did some when I was a kid. I started off with the ones from Walmart, then built some of my own.

Now I have a 3 yr  old boy thats been obsessed with rockets and space since I took him to the Air and Space museum  and planetarium a few weeks ago. All he wants to watch on TV is stuff on The Science Channel about space and rockets.

Anyway, I'd like to get a cheapo rocket to fly with him when we go out to visit his grandparents. Apparently Walmart quit selling these???

Anyone have a favorite online store? It looks like theres quite a few.

Here's a pic of Mustangduckk Jr "helping" work on the wood for my RPK build. I'm a 3rd generation engineer, I think he's going to be the 4th. I caught him taking apart my tape measure with a screw driver a few weeks ago...

I had lots of fun doing that as a kid.  Remember a Young Astronauts program in grade school where we shot them off.  My daughter and I are working on one now.  Some paint and it will be ready to launch.  A local hobby store went out of business last year.  I got five rockets, a few packs of motors and a launch system for $30.

My local Walmart carries the stuff.

WhenI was a kid I bought a basically DIY kit that came with all sorts of parts to build your own.  Way cheaper than an individual kit, and I think I made 4-5 rockets out of it.
The gnarliest was a 3 stage.  I almost shot down a RC plane with it   tipped sideways before the 3rd stage fully ignited and streaked dead level for the dudes plane like it had a seeker head on it!    He was across the field and looking at me like "how did you get it to do that!".
Things are fun!
IIRC I remember stuffing one full of mighty mites and it actually ignited all of them having them pop as it fell (on private land)

I used to. I gave them all to my parents to give to my nephew.

We had some pretty cool ones my Sr. year of engineering. We split up into teams for a class and had to design our rocket, assemble and test our telemetry and recording equipment, and then predict the trajectory of our rockets. My team did excellent; we predicted the final altitude within just a few feet! We claimed it was proof of our mathematical prowess rather than the sheer luck that it actually was.

Some of the box store hobby shops and craft stores still sell the kits and motors. The Michael's near me does not.
Never ordered any online.

Damn. I used to build rockets when I was around 14. (30 years ago )

I was thinking about seeing what's out there now.

Where is a good site to get them now?

Yep, I do. The Walmart here still has them.

I buy from http://www.hobbylinc.com/ They have the best prices and fast shipping.

And this is a good forum: http://www.rocketryforum.com/

Any of the starter kit at hobbyinc or hobby lobby are g2g. [headbang}

Rocketry is pretty simple, launch into the wind, secure the recovery system real good so it doesn't come off, and use nose weight! lol

or it will go sideways like the other guys and you might lose it.
