Well, he isn't a pit viper (note the round pupils and non-triangular shaped head), nor is it a coral snake. So he shouldn't be venomous. That is all that really matters.

Definitely a yellow rat,.they're not really very yellow, except for some in South Florida. May have a feisty attitude, but harmless unless you're a lizard, rodent or bird. Leave him alone and he'll do the same for you.

yeah, it looks like a rat snake.  Good snake to keep around the property unless you really like mice and rats and such.
