Boss took me out to a chinese buffet today, been a long time since I've been to one. Only had 2 plates of food, but it got me thinking, whats the average amount of plates ya'll eat at a chinese buffet?

Zero.

I don't do buffets if I can help it.

Depends on the buffet.
MSG would floor me and it would stop RTFN!

Last time it was three. I go once every couple of years.

Two normally, three if I'm REALLY hungry.

No desserts though, and only water to drink.

Some buffets have really good tasting sushi if that's what they really are. The best ones have the person making it in front of diners and have a huge tip jar nearby.

And if I can't help it, it's hardly worth the price for what I eat, which isn't much.

Three, usually.  The third one is usually just a partial.  Maybe an eggroll and a couple of those powdered doughnut things.

1-2 plates.

1st plate: normal helpings of different types of food

2nd plate: dessert, maybe a scoop of Jello, fruits and one of those weird Chinese cream roll-up things.

Most buffets suck.  It's difficult to find a good one.

Buffet means "eat whatever you want", not "eat as much as you can"

Haven't been to a Chinese buffet in years. However one just opened up down the street... Might have to visit. They do to-go boxes where you are simply charged by the pound of the food you get...

3-4.  A buffett is always a challenge.
9/5/2012 12:57:02 PM EDT

3-4 if i'm "REAL" hungry. I don't usually load them though. Place i go to had some damn good meat loaf and there butter potatoes and mongolian pork is no dessert

1-2 if i'm drinking sweet tea.
2-3 if i'm drinking water.

1. Food.
2. A FEW more chunks of the good food, fruit, and maybe a dessert. All things total less than 1/2 a plate.
3. Cup of egg drop soup

If the crab legs are done right, I can eat countless plates... .

The sushi buffets around here are actually pretty good. Two plates of sushi for me

My favorite chinese place is a buffet that charges somewhere around 3.69 a pound... I love to go once a week and get lunch and dinner for 7 bucks.

Not my preference of places to eat...

That being said I cant see eating more than 2 plates. Thats not because Im some kind of health nut tier 1 paleo guy.

I just cant imagine what my insides would deploy after that much of a salt intake...

Four or five, I dont put a ton of food on each plate.

I never understood the point of piling it up, you can go back as many times as you want!
9/5/2012 1:07:33 PM EDT
[#33]
3-5 but I dont use up all the space and go vertical on the plate.  I only go to one specific place near me, and I am always the minority.  It is good food, and it does not last long so it does not sit long.

Typical plates for me..these were both from the same visit...

Another visit...

Last time I went to a Chinese buffet was about 10 years ago,  had 2 or 3 plates then.

Don't do buffets now apart from when on a cruise ship for lunch, and then I usually go back for a second plate (but no dessert).
9/5/2012 1:10:26 PM EDT

5-8 or so.

But I'm really selective, I'll wait for what I want and I don't take a lot at a time.

I also stick to proteins and vegetables and avoid all the rice, noodles, and other starch.

Usually just to fuck with the staff, I ask what the Chinese people in the secluded section are eating.
I've never once seen Chinese people eat at a Chinese buffet. That's a red flag right there.
If Chinese won't eat it, why should I?

That is actually some damn decent looking sushi for a buffet. However looks may be deceiving.

Nothing wrong with the buffet food, just that it's Americanized "Chinese" food.

The Chinese friends and extended family in the reserved party room are probably eating a bunch of stuff like poached turtle nads, and deep fried scorpions on a stick, followed by a course of sea cucumber soup or something...

And I'm really jealous of the buffets that put out all that sushi. None I've seen around Milwaukee do it, save one place, now gone, that just had grocery store style "California roll" with crab stix in the center.

Must be because they haven't hired a Mexican to make the good sushi yet.

Do you also not check coin return slots because of the AIDS needles commonly hidden in them?

Just checking as to how far your paranoia extends.

Some of the BEST "chinese" style food I ever had was ordered off a menu that you had to ask for at a buffet place. The food off the menu was nothing like the buffet, even the same entrees. They also delivered, but you needed to make sure you asked for "menu" entree when ordering over phone. Lunch special was $5 for pork or chicken entree (always roll pork) with pork fried rice and egg roll.

No, he just checks all the seats at the theater with leather gloves first, and wears em while pumping gas...

Most buffets don't serve Chinese food, they serve American adaptations of some very fast and loose interpretations of Chinese food.

We have several buffets in my AO that have very good and very fresh traditional food where I am often the only white guy in the joint when we visit. Oddly, these places are usually cleaner and less expensive than their Americanized counterparts in the area.

Actually houston has several very good choices for buffets of many ethnic foods, Indian, Asian (all kinds), Mediterranean, Greek, Italian, Brazilian and German, to name a few. I love the food scene in this town.

My mom likes to go to this one place. I get two plates can't take more MSG than that without getting sick.

The Chinese lady owner gives people the stink eye who do more.
