Im trying to remove my RRA's free float quad rail. I have the upper in the vice, and the front gas block is un bolted. Should the tube just unscrew?

Well I got the hardguard off now I need to get the damn nut that is locked onto the end of the handguard. I can't install the gas block with it attached to the handguard.

YHM do a hand guard tool that will fit that

I think there is a tool for that. Lowes probably has something that will fit in the plumbing section.

I have a DPMS armorers tool but I don't think it has anything on it that will fit into the machines slots.

Here

Failing that, secure the rail in a vice and use a large flat bladed screwdriver or blunt chisel as a punch

I was going to try that but I dont want to mar up the forgrip or warp it in the vice.

Do they make a vice block for them?

No but if you use a couple of pieces of wood in the vice jaws you'll be OK.
It won't be very tight

Yes factory installed. The locktite is what I just thought of. Anyone know if they use it during install?

some places use purple lock tight on it...use a heat gun and it will come off easier even with out lock tite having been used..

I don't have a heat gun, just a hand held palm torch.

It's possible that the barrel nut is Loctited to the hand guard but unlikely that the locknut will be Loctited to the barrel nut

in my experience the lock tight is put on both the tube and the nut...

if you use the torch stay away from the metal about 6-8 inches...take your time and constantly move the flame...
9/3/2012 8:46:58 AM EDT
[#31]
a lot of times it is easier to wrap a towel or strap wrench to the tube and turn if of rather than the lock nut...because there is very little surface on the lock nut notches...

and marring up the tube or nut is very easy to do...
9/3/2012 9:04:03 AM EDT
[#32]
Probably has lock tight on both. You can get a heat gun for $20 from Lowes that will help. You can use a flat head screw driver as a punch, but the YHM tool is recommended.

Ok little update.

I got it off. I chocked the rail in a vice with wood and I wrapped the nut with electrical tape. I took a pipe wrench to it and it popped free. There was very, little marring on the nut. It looks good.

Just for future reference, the only part that had locktite was in between the handguard and the barrel nut. There was none on the locknut.

Thanks for everyones help. I learned a lot today
