This may not be news to some of you but it was to me.
Now AT&T allows you to put your iPads on your cellular plan.

Correct. Use your phone as the hotspot and tether the iPad to your data stream.

I don't see the point in paying extra money for a 3G iPad because, as it was explained to me, you are charged a flat fee anytime you use the service with the iPad equivalent to a monthly charge whether you use the iPad again during that period or not. I would rather - if lifestyle demanded it - pay for the hot spot AT&T plan and just tether the iPad when I needed to.

I anticipate using it more. My job has authorized the purchase of ebooks and electronic journal subscriptions.

I had been buying the data plan separately. Didn't know you could put it on your cell plan.

I believe you can jailbreak your iPhone to make it a mobile hot spot, or used to be able to.
Then just use the WiFi, I also took a pass on the 3G model.

Yes.

I have the "New iPad", and when LTE is available, it is a better solution due to the increased bandwidth.  I have my iPad jailbroken and use the PDANet app from Cydia.  Works like a charm, and I have seen download speeds in excess of 40 mbps down, and over 20mbps up with it.  And this was on AT&T !!

I have the new iPad and it is my hotspot. I am with Verizon though, I don't know if AT&T will let you.

They do not allow it on the standard iPad data plans.  It is permissible on the new shared data plans, and it can be enabled on a Jailbroken iPad using one of the apps available from Cydia, such as MiWi, or my favorite, PDANet.  This use is in violation of their Terms Of Service, but works well, and I have never had any issues using it.

I have a standard iPad plan with Verizon. Nothing else on the account. $30 bucks a month for 2g and I have a hotspot.

I have hotspot feature for no additional cost via Verizon, not only do they allow it, it was a selling point....

That's true, but let's not forget that AT&T gives 3Gb for $30 on their iPad data plan.

My experience is that even 3G service is pretty fast if you get a decent signal.  LTE is great, but for most website browsing it doesn't really seem that much faster to me.

Yes it is. At least on Verizon.

I used mine as a hotspot while a renting cabin this summer.
