I don't have any puppy pictures on hand at the moment, but here is my Basset at 8yo helping plant a shrub. http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u321/definc/2012-04-17182007.jpg And here she is doing her best impersonation of Johnny_Reno's avatar http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u321/definc/2012-06-26205408.jpg It's funny you mention Johnny_Reno. The dog in his avatar looks like mine's twin.

I like 'em, they're like stubby little bloodhounds. That's basically what they are. They were bred around the 1500s from Blood hounds and St. Hubert's Hounds to track in brush too thick for full size Blood Hounds. Their sense of smell is second only to Blood Hounds. They are really sweet dogs. They can be hard headed when they have a scent and don't want to come back. You need to keep them fit. If they get fat it puts a strain on their back and they can have back problems. My Basset, Merlin, looked a lot like the OP's dog. |

Quoted: Didn't know that but would have guessed they had Bloodhound in the line somewhere. I'd bet that's where they get their sweet disposition. Dags are cool, hound dags are the coolest.Quoted: I like 'em, they're like stubby little bloodhounds. That's basically what they are. | My Basel lived to almost 13, bless his heart. He was like a piece of expensive furniture at 75 pounds. Didn't even look pudgy. He was a tricolor and everything about him was exaggerated. He even ran a rabbit for me once. I shot it and let him eat it. His undercarriage was a bit low for hunting our terrain. |

I got to dogsit two bassets for friends many, many times before old age caught up to them and they departed this life.
The male bayed normally (loudly) but the female always sounded like a seal when she got going, which always cracked me up. I normally only fed them dog treats but this one time I was going through McDonald's drive-thru when a hamburger sale was on, so got them each one. Bad mistake. They had the burger tossed back in their mouths and done in two bites but the fresh mustard on the burger must have overwhelmed their nose as they started wheezing and sucking in air while chewing. I thought I was killing them till I realized what happened and then laughed hysterically. I still miss them, and they weren't even mine. |
