The last one I was recommended here doesn't seem to be up to par.

Not being true HD or not getting plates clear is one thing, but the nighttime performance is just unacceptable.

Is this possible under 100$?

I have a windshield mount for my Droid Razr for Nav. IT doubles as a dash cam since it mounts lens forward. The Droid is HD and so it is the ticket.  A Razr is about 100 bucks now and the mount in the $40 dollar range.

Here is a quick video I did using it inpromptu. This may have been my Droid X2 since it was awhile ago but same deal. I was pissed at my boss and made an unplanned run.

that is NICE and clear.

my one hesitation to topping 75$ or so is in case I leave it in and its stolen, don't want to be out too much.

I've been thinking of getting one.

Here is another thread on the subject that I've been watching:

I like the wide angle that cam provides versus my Droid.

When you consider its dark out it worked pretty well. The look really good during daylight.

The nice thing about using Droid is you can send video in real time to others as it is happening if your in 4g territory.

You're surprised a $30 camera couldn't read license plates? Did you even read the reviews? I just returned a $100 HD camera that you could only see the plates if you were stopped. You get what you pay for...

If you're worried about theft there are more discrete options like the ones where the camera is integrated with your rear view mirror. Those seem less likely to be noticed and stolen so I would be okay with paying a little more for them.

Just my two cents...

i use a go pro with a go pro mount on my dash for when i go offroading. it would make a great dash cam.

I use one as well as a dash cam at times, also in the plane.

But I think the GoPro setup is outside his desired pricing.

if you want your blood to boil, watch the video

if you don't, then forget about it.

Otherwise I watched it for you:  Clifs Notes:  cop harassment caught on driver's dashcam, cop fired.

I found this site while researching dash cams.

http://dashcamtalk.com/dash-cam-comparison/

I might go with the GS1000 Orange Menu.

Their top pick is in the OP's price range.

I have no idea how neutral the author of the site is...
