Call local rescues / animal shelters? They seem to be staffed with nuts who go through more of a vetting process than it would take to adopt a baby. I'm not letting some hairy legged, lesbian, man hater judge my worth as a dog owner... I agree with your assessment. I had people flip out when I said I wanted to buy a cat - you can't do that, you ADOPT a cat. No, it's an animal, you buy it. |

maybe you could tell us what state you're in , so somebody could recommend a local breeder.
call your vet and ask him if he has any clients who are reputable breeders. He may also know someone who has a good dog they need to give away. ETA: the "Lab" pics kill me. Years ago, we walked into a Petsmart with our Dobie and GSD. This frumpy old lady ( who had a stubby-legged, box-nosed mutt on a leash) asked "what kind of dog is that"?, pointing at the dobie. We told her, and she said "That must be one of those "other" kind of dobermans; mine is a purebred." We told our vet the story, and she said it happens all the time; people come in with their new "pedigreed" dog, and she had to inform them it was a third generation mongrel. |

If you have any local hunting/outdoors forums, check those. My latest lab came from one of those, free, because he loves to play ball, but doesn't have any interest in ducks. He's a wonderful dog. Like this one |

I don't "parrot". If the shoe fits, its your problem, not mine... |
