We're looking to replace our Lab that died last year. While perusing Craigslist, it struck me that people are either ignorant or liars or both.

Some "LABS"...

Um, not a Lab. Cute, but not a Lab...

Not this one either. Hound dog/cur???

Don't know what this one is, but a "Lab" he ain't. Some sort of pit genetics...

Sigh... I'm stuck in a household with two wimmins and two cats. I need a Lab.

Call local rescues / animal shelters?

They seem to be staffed with nuts who go through more of a vetting process than it would take to adopt a baby.
I'm not letting some hairy legged, lesbian, man hater judge my worth as a dog owner...

I agree with your assessment. I had people flip out when I said I wanted to buy a cat - you can't do that, you ADOPT a cat.

No, it's an animal, you buy it.

maybe you could tell us what state you're in , so somebody could recommend a local breeder.

call your vet and ask him if he has any clients who are reputable breeders. He may also know someone who has a good dog they need to give away.

ETA:
the "Lab" pics kill me. Years ago, we walked into a Petsmart with our Dobie and GSD. This frumpy old lady ( who had a stubby-legged, box-nosed mutt on a leash) asked "what kind of dog is that"?, pointing at the dobie. We told her, and she said "That must be one of those "other" kind of dobermans; mine is a purebred."

We told our vet the story, and she said it happens all the time; people come in with their new "pedigreed" dog, and she had to inform them it was a third generation mongrel.

I've noticed that too. Any dog with a black spot is a "Lab-mix".

Get the Coon Hound, it's cute.

They're either in it for profit, or profit + nutty.

Have you actually checked your local rescues/shelters or are you just parroting what you heard on ARFCOM?

I got our mutt from the shelter...great dog.

As a puppy...

a year ago:

(about 7 years old then).

I think "Lab" a the shelter is code for "we don't know what it is exactly, but Labs are friendly, so let's call it a Lab blend".

((the Vet actually thinks mine has Lab and Jack Russel Terrier in her...she's only about 20 lbs))

If you have any local hunting/outdoors forums, check those.  My latest lab came from one of those, free, because he loves to play ball, but doesn't have any interest in ducks.  He's a wonderful dog.

Liberty Creek Labs in Indianapolis IN.
We got our Choco-Lab there, she has black and yellows as well.

We're doing some extensive home remodeling but once we're done, I'm buying Wifey another Lab.

I don't "parrot". If the shoe fits, its your problem, not mine...
