Looks like a really sick kangaroo rat.

It is California's least endangered "endangered" species.

The California Valley/Carizo Plains area has them by the millions.   Every time I've ever camped up there our camp site has been crowded with the things, scanning a 1 acre area with a 2 million power spot light will reward you with about 50-60 pairs of eyes staring back at you.

That is just one valley of "endangered" rats.   The things inhabit the hell out of the lower valley floors as well.   Used to see them all over the place in Kern County when out late night running our dogs back in the 90s.

Cute little buggers.   My dad had them as pets as a kid back in the 60s/70s.   He reports that they are nocturnal as hell and will flat out annoy the hell out of you if you kept them as a pet.
