I recently purchased a TAG Banshee plate carrier and am now looking to fill its armor pockets.

I called bulletproofme.com to ask about the difference between their Level IIIA soft armor, and the level IIIA soft armor that is sold on TAG's website.

After getting the information I was looking for, Tim asked if I was ever going to run rifle plates.  I told him that it is in the plan, but not in the immediate future.  I have always wanted some armor and since I got the Banshee and this whole CO situation, I figured now is as good of a time as any.

For now, my plan was to buy the level IIIA backers and then save for the level III rifle plates.  But Tim suggested that I might consider level 4 plates to save money.  As many of you know, the level 4 plates are stand alone and don't need soft armor plate backers.  So, while they are more expensive individually, they will cost almost half the price as buying level 3 rifle plates AND level 3A plate backers.

I like the idea of the level 3A backers as I can choose whether I want to run hard armor or not, still with some sort of bullet resistance.  With the level 4's, it's all or none.  Also, I can push my budget to afford the 3A backers this month, unlike the level 4 plates.  The main reason I chose the Banshee is because of its compact size.  I wanted a small, lightweight rig.  I'm still in the process of getting more pouches and such for it, but I'm still not sure if I am ready for big plates to be sticking out of it.

This is where you folks come in.....

I posted this in the gear forum but there's more attention, here.  What are your thoughts?  Do I buy the level 3A backers and then get the level 3 ceramics.......or do I only get the level 4 stand-alone's?

I appreciate the input.

If you don't mind the weight, just get level IVs from armorsurplus.com.  Cheapest place on the web that I have found (so far).

But you're going to wish you had a soft backer or level III-A hard plates to act as trauma pads, if you ever get shot, even with standalone plates.

That's what I had thought.  I figured they would offer some cushion.  The Banshee doesn't have too much padding on the inside, covering the plate pocket.

 Its METT-T dependent.

Seriously the extra kevlar does not weigh that much.  Another option you should consider is a full size concealable Kevlar vest that you can wear either overtly or under a shirt.

If you ever need to go full retard just put your concealable vest on over your shirt, then put your plate carrier over it. Most homicides in the U.S. are by (criminals with) handgun bullets and shotguns. High powered rifles are rare. If your worried about how it looks then buy a second cloth carrier ti match your chest rig.
