At approximately 2300 hours on Sunday, May 6th 2012, California Highway Patrol Officer David “Ryan” Bunting was in his patrol vehicle, stopped beside the road on California Highway 178 near Bakersfield. According to reports, a dark-colored SUV passed him headed westbound, executed a U-turn, and came back, driving the wrong way up the one-way road.

A gunman in the back seat on driver’s side then opened fire with what is believed to be an automatic handgun.

Ambush!

Lucky cop. Suspects had a very good group that would have been fatal.

Auto Glass front windshields do funny things to bullets. Very lucky man.

Hope the officer recovers soon.

Did they catch the scumbags?

Motive?

ETA:

Driver was wearing a cowboy hat and officer said a "fully automatic" "machine pistol" was used.

Shooter was a hispanic male in a wife-beater.

Reminds me of the Sgt from my department who got in a shootout with a guy. He came over the radio calmly and said words to the effect of "Central, my operator (partner) has the perp in custody at the location. I'm in route to Kings County ER, the guy shot me twice."

Absolutely amazing radio work on a normal day let alone the fact he had been hit twice.  That gave me chills.

Almost certainly. That's a cartel style hit if I've ever heard of one.

Not necessarily cartel hit men, but possibly Norteno gang initiation or local gang acting on orders from a cartel.

There is truth to calling him a pro.   With traffic accidents being a huge concern for officers responding code, it is very thoughtful of him to advise units how to respond.

We've lost a couple of law enforcement in the area over the past few years.

Deputy Joe Hudnall was killed in an accident in that canyon.

Deputy James Throne was killed when a fellow responding Deputy crashed into him on a code run.

There are a number of us who live in the area where that occurred, some here work in or with the local agencies that responded to that call, I am unaware if anyone has located the vehicle or made any arrests yet.   I don't want to go to anymore funerals, I've already been to two in four years with one of them being a friend I went through the academy with.

For what it is worth, the area where that occurred is somewhat remote, there are NOT a lot of ways in or out of the area.   Look up Lake Isabella on Google maps.    Between the 155, 178, and some other roads through the mountains, it is surprising the guys got away.

No dashcam footage? Wow, it's 25 miles to 395 and even that isn't exactly high density traffic. On the Bakersfield side there are a few more roads and better options for getting away if they make it to the valley, but it's still not very good. Not a lot of options for hiding the vehicle in a residential area, either.

Probably not. He may not have had the opportunity to activate the recorder at the time of the shooting, and if his system is like the ones used by my dad's dept. it wouldn't have automatically activated until the overheads were turned on.
