[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I ordered a Raspberry Pi Today (Page 1 of 2)
I've got two of them. One's running media center. The other one I'm testing different OS versions on. Downloading what is supposed to be the official version of Raspian as I type this. Lots of fun!
Here's what I've learned on accessories. I've got a cheap powered USB hub. I can run both PIs, keyboard, mouse, and charge my phone at the same time. It says you can run it on a 2GB card. I was having problems w/ space on the Wheezy build after an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and rpi-update. Don't try to run it on a 2 GB card IMO, or pay attention to space if you do. I've got one of the adafruit cases. It works well, but some people say they're fragile. I haven't seen any problems. I've also got one of the cases from builttospec.com. It looks really professional, but it's a bit of a pain to put together. I tried one of the 3D printed cases from Ebay. It was junk. |

I've been toying with cramming one of those into a one of those 1980s Coleco table top video games with a little LCD screen, a rechargeable battery, and a shit-load of MAME games... Seems it would be way cool. In fact I've been keeping an eye on eBay for "non working" examples of the Coleco machines. (My inner geek wouldn't let me destroy a working version of one of those).

Does it come with the linux os or do you download that from somewhere? I might just have to get one to play with. I ordered one a few weeks ago from allied. Not sure the delivery date. Seems like a much better and cheaper option to an arduino with the real headers but also full blown smartphone level capabilities. I also have a D2 plug on the way. Much the same thing but not as cheap and has more shit on it. I'm sure one of them will make a great car media player if I can get a touch screen to work. |

I'm using this version. http://www.raspbmc.com/download/ So far I've listened to some streaming audio and watched some videos I had on local media. It's not super fast but it's quite usable. I expect speed to come w/ software maturity but I may try my hand at over clocking since I have a 2nd system now. |

From what the folks say on the Pi forum, if you want one to be a regular PC, it is not their yet. Browsing just doesn't work, even when overclocked. It may with later OS builds. Web browsing sucked in Squeeze. Wheezy is useable, but a bit slow. Haven't tried any of the others. I'm trying to get the Wheezy Raspbian written to one of my cards right now, but it's failing at 84%. May have to try downloading it again tonight, but it's supposed to be *MUCH* faster. |

Perhaps .......win |

I was thinking about getting one as a media center, but then I started doing some research on streaming media from my Mac to the Roku I bought a few weeks ago. Using Plex, I can now stream iTunes, photos and video from my Mac to my Roku, so this raspberry doesn't really do anything media center-wise my Roku can't. And the Roku has built in wireless. |

Now to find a nice enclosure for it The US distributor sells some. Might be fun to make your own. http://www.alliedelec.com/lp/120626raso/ |

Now to find a nice enclosure for it This one is nice http://builttospecstore.storenvy.com/products/404262-raspberry-pi-enclosure-kit or this one https://www.adafruit.com/products/859 The first one is bit of a pain to assemble, but not bad. The 2nd one is easier to take apart if you want to get to the GPIO for some reason. They both have notches for a ribbon cable to come out. (I've got both cases.) I got one of the 3d printed cases off ebay. It was junk. |

You have great potential. ETA: my geek son has a friend who has one. In his possession. I have seen it. They are real. |

Check this out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18900862 "A Raspberry Pi computer has boldly gone where no other Pi has gone before. High-altitude ballooning enthusiast Dave Akerman tethered one, complete with a webcam to photograph its progress, to a helium balloon. The bare-bones computer managed to reach an altitude of almost 25 miles (40km) before the balloon popped and it returned to Earth. The Pi sent live images throughout the flight and was safely retrieved by tracking its onboard radio transmitter." |

Here is one thing that I don't understand....why go through the hassel of building this thing when you could simply buy something like this....Android HTPC?
From what I have read, you have much better specs and it can run Ubuntu as well. The only thing that I could possibly see the rasbery PI for is just a novalty item or simply just tinkering around. |

The price is great for the PI though. This part in red. |

The price is great for the PI though. This part in red. I can understand that....but I've started to grow tired of doing that to my stuff. I just want to buy something and have it work. LOL I will admit that every now and then I do get into the tinkering kind of mood though. For $35, it's not a bad device to have around. I just wish that it had more power. 700mhz with 256MB ram is pretty weak and you can't expect much in the terms of performance....even if the OS is optomised. One downfall that I can see with this thing is the potential for it to be a money pit. |

That's it I'm ordering one. In all reality I'd like to play around with it. |
| I can think of several uses for mine. I'm going to connect TTL -> Serial adapters and will be able to connect to the console port on my Cisco devices. Can connect to one of them and use it to turn on my main machine remotely. Will use one for a Media Center box. Not sure beyond that other than having fun. |

android 4.0, 1gig of ram, 1ghz processor(even though some claim 1.5m its not) HDMI, microSD up to 64gig(i believe) can run ubuntu, and is pretty darn portable. there is a newer version rumored to be coming later this year and if this thing does what i want i will order the new version as well. plan is to remove it from that "case" and install it in its own enclosure with a USB hub and have a SSD HDD for loading movies and such to. while it will take away from the compactness i will make sure it is an "all in one" setup and still be about the size of 3.5"HDD enclosure if not a little smaller. |

Is there one like that can be powered solely by a usb port? My Sony TV has a USB port on the back, it would be nice to have the TV power it and not have a seperate wall wart plugged in. Nevermind, looks like this one can be powered by USB according to the youtube video. |

Can also be powered via the microsd port as well so a decent cell phone charger will power it. It SHOULD be in the mail box as I type, to bad I'm working a 24 or else I would be messing around with it right now. Will have to wait till tomorrow. |
