I have a toshiba laptop that the screen doesn't work, so I have a monitor connected to it.

Well the monitor stopped working after I removed the battery from the laptop.

I cant remember if the display setting in XP has to be set to external or if I just had it plugged in and it worked. Problem is there is no way to see what I'm doing. Well except for about 1/3 of the screen on laptop works but is faded out and fuzzy.

Most laptops require the battery to be present to operate, don't they?

Did you try cycling the video outputs? There should be a little symbol to use along with the FN key somewhere.

Only if the power cable isn't plugged in.  Most I've seen will run just fine without.

As mentioned, there should be a blue "Fn" key on the laptop.  One of the F keys at the top of the keyboard should have a little image that looks like a couple screens laid over top of each other.  Hold the Fn key, hit that screen button.  There'll be three settings, laptop screen, external screen, both.

The battery is still in it, I took it out and put it back in.

For some reason not sure but battery maybe be crapping out.

Sometimes it will start beeping and shut off even though its plugged in to the adapter. And while doing this the battery light doesn't come on.

All good for now though.

Well mine shows f4 to be a picture of a harddrive while f5 has a monitor picture.

But you were really close!
