Ok, it turns out my wife has been embeziling funds from her paycheck    On the upside, she was doing it to buy me a watch for our anniversary
She doesnt want to pick it out herself because she knows that I'm really picky about what watch I wear so she tells me she'd like to get me a Rolex and my budget is $7k
I dont want a used one and I see Rolexes going in that price range, so what are some good suggestions?

p.s.  I'm typically an Omega guy and I already have a couple so its really a Rolex I want.

I'm not in the know regarding used Rolex prices... What does a used Milgauss run?  That orange lightning bolt second hand is great.

Rolex kills me with the "Ring Lock System" text.  Looks awful, just like Ed Brown's new rollmarks.  Draws the eye in a terrible way.

ETA:  Milgauss is in your range.  That would be my pick.

GMT Masters and stainless SUBs are overdone, IMO.

Two-Tone Sub w/blue dial (if in price range)

I was able to find a like-new stainless/platinum yacht master for just under your budget, but that was a long time ago.....not sure what they are going for now. Definitely check out the yacht....it doesnt scream 'Rolex' from across the room, and if you want a more subtle watch, it's the one. If you want the classic look, get the Sumariner....either way you can't go wrong.

ETA a blurry pic, but you get the idea...

Guys, thanks for these recommendations, but I forgot to note that I have the Omega Planet Ocean right now so a sea type watch isnt really what I want.  She wants to get me more of a "formal  attire" looking watch.

My out-the-door price on my stainless GMT Master II was like $6,700, that was with family pricing I think. With a 7k budget I'm pretty sure you're stuck in stainless GMT/Sub territory.

Not that that's a bad thing. A stainless rolex works with causal clothes or suits (IMO) so it's a damn versatile watch.

My "dressy" Rolex is a Yacht-Master.  Very nice blend of formal and sporty.  I generally see them sell in the ~$7k - $7.5k range.  Less for a nice pre-owned model.

I own Rolexes, so I am very honestly, and I know what I speak of, beause of daily carry:

under 45?

Get the GMT II.

The time zone thing is really useful. ( second option: The Sub. With Date and the "bubble" )

Over 45?

Get the Datejust II ( with 6 Digit Number, the > 41 mm Watch )

Both in Stainless Steel.

The Datejust 41 mm is just too small. IF you want any such, consider the Turn - O - Graph.

A ROLEX is something else than an Ooouumeeehgah. Trust me.

There´s the masterpieces, Breguet, Patek Philippe, Blancpain, the higher Class IWC´s and Glashuettes ... then there´s Rolex ... not anywhere as complicated, but the REPUTATION alone ... then all others, whether they be Omega, Breitling, ... fine watches, well made, but "also - rans".

What do you consider dressy a two tone sub blue/gold never fails nor a used but lnib Daytona from a good dealer.  Rolex yacht master gold/steel oyster perpetual oughta work at 7k.  The Ulysses Nardin Maxi Marine or dual time big date are also worth it

You buy the Black SS Ceramic Submariner because it's one of the few that appreciates every year as the price of the new ones increase.  Five years from now - your used Submariner will be worth what it cost new and it will then keep going up from there.  The SS Daytona is basically the same idea (and to a lesser extent the GMT-II).  However, the Submariner IS Rolex.

You should be able to pick up a Black Ceramic Sub at an authorized dealer for ~$7500 if you search around.

I would argue that if you're going to spend $7,000 on a watch and you don't want a Submariner - you look at another brand entirely.  You can probably find a used Paitek at that price point.

i would not buy a rolex right now.

paneri all the way for me.

the new rolex lines i don't like, for their pricing i want something more it just seems stale.

if i was going for a rolex, i would look for a pepsi cola one or the coke one's ( think magnum pi style)

the new ones i just cant get behind them

i would also look a patek, omega, bell and ross.

there are some other brands out there that have really steped it up notch. roelx is resting on it laurels.

I'm thinking of getting a Rolex Milgauss. Not because it looks good or I particularly need it because I work in high magnetic fields. But just because I'm an EE.

Its a toss up between that and the Omega Seamaster, a watch that I actually like how it looks.

Submariner has my vote.  I like the Deep Sea but that is one heavy watch.  I came across a nice counterfeit Deep Sea last week and went to a local Rolex dealer to have them check it out.  He was impressed how well it was made, even though it had several flaws.  Looking at the real Sea Dweller and the counterfeit under a microscope blew my mind.  The precision that goes into those watches is rediculous.  Over engineered, yes.  The Waterproof depth on the Deep Sea was 12,500 feet (that's over 2 miles!!!!!!!)  Don't know how a human can dive that far but I guess if you wanted to hang it outside a ROV you could.  Just make sure you buy from a legitimate Rolex dealer because the counterfeits are very good these days.

I would buy a used date just and call it a day. I have seen plenty for sale over the years that have never been worn. You can find them still in the box for half of retail trough many small jewelers and watch dealers. If you don't want a sport watch I'm not sure what else you'd go for in the Rolex line. Plus you and your wife could have fun with the leftover $$.

If it has to be a rolex, and dressier, yachtmaster or a president. Two tone is turn off for me personally, and my preference would be a datejust with the turnogragp bezel.

Oh and i like panerai and all but its a huge lump of steel with a gussied up, run o the mill unitas pocketwatch movement in it.
To describe it as more unusual (huge watch fad started in like '99) or better ( unitas? Really?)  is purely reaching.

Yes, Rolex is the go-to douchebag watch, but their movements are clean and reliable and their designs are timeless.

Omega knows their lunch had been eaten for decades, hence the move toward inhouse movements like the coaxial..

Personally I'd go with either a submariner or an explorer II. I'd get a used one either way.
A used rolex is likely to never dip below the value you paid for it, while most of the new ones will at best be in a period of loss if you were to re-sell it for the near foreseeable future.

But, I'd say its really dependent on what you're going to use it for. Rolex don't really have any dress watches that are nice (imo) so if you were getting one for that use I'd strongly suggest you look at the Jaeger LeCoultre Master control ultra thin. That watch is unbelieveably nice imho.

If I were limited to Rolex, my choices would be either the older (pre-DSSD) Sea Dweller or the classic Sub/Date.
Both are great watches and classics.

I'll happily sit squarely in five years ago and love my Panerai.

I don't know if you've really looked into current Rolex prices.  A new stainless submariner retails for 8.5k.  You might be lucky and get it down to an even 8, but 7 isn't happening at an authorized dealer.  Gold, more complicated models, etc. all cost more.

You could probably swing a new Datejust or Datejust II for 7k. I haven't priced those, so cannot say for certain.  I'd wear either one of those.  Or wait a little longer and get your funds to 8k and try and get a deal on a sub!

Only thing i dislike about Rolex is the case diameter size. typically it's 40mm. I say think outside the box, and choose something other than Rolex. Tutima makes really nice watches,it's a german brand, as does Muehle-Glashuette.

Plus youy will have 2-3k left over for a nice rifle.
