Have you ever been to a gun range? Apparently, that's where they go after they leave the lake.

Not fat and I fish all the time.

Fly is my favorite but I do love fishing for crappie.

Hobby, not sport.

It is only a sport if you go to fishing competitions. I never spent much time watching those fishing tournament on the ESPN, but the few time I did watch, I wasn't seeing many fatties.

I'm leaving in an hour.  Will paddle about 7 miles in 101 degree weather, have dinner  at a lakeside burger place you have to climb a cliff to get to and then will paddle back.

Want to come?  I have spare kayaks, you can show me how it's done.

If you just knew how far we hump it to and from the fishing grounds.

You can get a good workout if you don't use a hook and line.

Funny, all the pro tournament fishermen in my family have pretty athletic builds....

Still, it's a contest of skill, not a sport.

Fishing is still a great pasttime.

Pouring what little money they win into the latest and greatest gear (when it's not provided by sponsors), and whats leftover you use for the bills and eating, well, they aren't eating much...

Not everyone in pro golf, fishing tourneys, rodeo, etc, is making good money. The low rankers often have day jobs just to live.

Often as guides.  My cousin spent 300 days last year on the water either fishing, prefishing, or guiding.  Rain, shine, cold, sick as a dog...  $400/day or more on a guide trip sounds great until you realize what gas costs and how much you can burn in a day....

He also cleared well into 6 figures....  (ETA:  the year before he cleared half as much... that's a pretty wide swing)

Why does ARF have so much sand in the ole vagoo today?

Fishing is great fun for everyone.  You get to waste some time, have a cigar and a beer and maybe catch dinner or a story.

I love fishing!
I grew up in MN, my brother and I provided dinner more than once from the "river".
I now live in AZ but I still fish, and I'm not fat.

I pity the OP.....

Guess it's a good thing that at 6'3 and 175 he's still growing

7/12/2012 6:37:12 PM EDT

Lol.

You paddle a kayak 3 miles in 20kt winds just to catch one little striper.

Sometimes we have bad days. Still better than working, as they say.

That said, sportfishing is not a "sport."
It's fishing for sport. Homonym.

I used to fish FLW and BASS events - After a full week of all day fishing - practice and tournament, you are both mentally and physically exhausted and need at least a day of rest / all day driving to the next venue.

There were a few fat guys and a few fat older guys - I don't know how they did it. I'm fit and shit just starts hurting after being on your feet doing repetitive motions all day every day.

This photo needs a caption- "Hey OP, let me show you how to make a faggotry sandwich.  First, place your head between these 2 slices of Wonderbread"

I hike, backpack, climb, crawl and wave my flyrod around like a retard all day long when I fish.  It is not always physically relaxing unless you make it so.

The guys with cane poles along the edge of the ditch behind your Buford DrIve apartment are not an accurate cross section of the fishing demographic.
