I had a sprinkler system installed, and the jackasses cut a number of roots inside the dripline on several trees (15 to 24 in diameter trunks). The main supervisor came out with an arborist, who basically said, water the piss out of them, but then also recommended a high nitrogen fertilizer. Before I do something silly because he might have misspoke, is high nitrogen what is needed? I thought that inspired leaf production - I don't want to stress the trees any more than they already have been.

I'd suggest the long acting "tree spike" fertilizers.
Hammer the "pegs" in 1/2 way out the drip like.
Long acting (wont spike the trees w/nitrogen)
and lots-o-water

Yeah. What he said.

Nail on the head.

Sounds like your trees were subjected to some unintended root pruning.  I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I were you.
