Alright ARFCOM, here we go. I wanna learn German. What's the best way to go about this without spending tons of money that I don't have? I checked into Rosetta Stone, but don't really want to drop the coin on that right now. My local library used to have it so you could go on their website and use Rosetta Stone, but I guess the publisher made them stop doing that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I was going to recommend Rosetta.  It really helped me learn how to speak Spanish.

Call your local library and your local colleges, a lot of them have free to use language programs.  I know your local removed access, but you might be able to use it in the library and some of them will have language programs you can check out.

I like Pimseleur, but it can get expensive as well.  Get some Pimseleur CD's, a German to English / English to German dictionary, a couple of picture books, and some vocabulary books and go from there.

ETA:  IIRC, there are a few places on the web that will rent the CD's.

Find someone who speaks fluent German and pay him to talk to you ONLY in German for a dead minimum of half an hour a day,

using English only to teach you a word the first time around, and then you learn to use it immediately.

The total immersion method,  in other words.   It work.

Rosetta Stone is the biggest load of shit fostered on an unsuspecting public since Socialism.  It is truly proof that you can take a turd, price it high and support it with near saturation level advertising, and people will suddenly think it smells better than it does.

Get the German Pimsleur CDs.  Find them in a library.  Cost = free.

Get this book and CD set: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-German-Complete-Course/dp/0844202223

Go here for more advanced materials to push yourself: http://gloss.dliflc.edu/Default.aspx

Seek out German speakers to converse with.

Drive on.  Fuck Rosetta Stone.
