How in the hell did this ever get to be a legitimate religion?
How high up in the courts did it go to get that status? I'll stop now. |
|
Quoted:
You need the blessing of the high courts for freedom of religion?? Haven't done much reading on the true (well documented) nature and activities of Scientology, huh? Small hint: real religions don't engage in fraud, severing relationships, kidnapping, blackmail, organized barratry, prison camps for noncompliant members, and several well documented murders. Go do some reading at Operation Clambake. |

I think 99% of religion is for the birds. I don't see how Scientology is any crazier than someone dying and coming back to life or smearing goats blood on your door so your first born son isn't killed. You said it. The only "religion" that makes sense is Buddhism, which isn't a religion at all really. |

It would reflect better upon us if we simply allowed people to worship as they wish. Including aggressive, violent, fraudulent cults that have engaged in long-running criminal activity and are documented having infiltrated portions of various government agencies in order to exploit and control them? |

It would reflect better upon us if we simply allowed people to worship as they wish. But legitimate religions have a tax exempt status. This is where it becomes "sticky". If they didn't, which ones do you think Obama would be taxing into non existence, and which one do you think he would let slide? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Tao is the reason we have Zen :) I honestly believe that Buddhism is the full flowering of Hinduism |

Warren Jeffs Charles Manson see what I mean? Anti gunners use the exact same tactic of extremism to argue gun rights. You're not out of popular company. |

apples and oranges. ...if it makes you feel better Oh c'mon. How can you equate a possible scam religion to gun ownership? Let me put it this way. I have no problem with people worshiping who or what they want. I didn't start this thread to discuss that. But usually the state decides what constitutes a legitimate religion, because of the tax status. So, let scientologists be scientologists but take away the legitimate "church/religion" status. I could start my own church/ministry. I am ordained. So any money I get I can keep tax free, right? I wonder how that would fly with the IRS. |

IIRC, and I will look first of the week, there is still an open DOJ investigation on Front Sight and the "church" of scientology. DOJ alleged that front sight (which in the old days would give conversion lectures in their tents during breaks) was stock piling automatic weapons for the "church". Everything you need to know about them is in a South Park episode.

| Let's be clear. Scientology is not a religion and you don't know the difference between a religion and cult, you haven't done your homework. Paying off pols. to get tax exempt status doesn't prove it is a religion. Thank goodness science boy Cruise's wife wised up and split before that idiot sent the kid to "boarding school." |

Care to name a "real religion" that doesnt do, or hasnt done, those things? I think a significant difference is that with Scientology we have the founder himself, within some of our lifetimes, discussing making money by inventing a religion. That really starts to call into question any genuine belief on which a "true" religion might be founded. |

Scientology just shows you how far a drunk science fiction writer can take a bet. When you look at which famous people are involved in that crock of horseshit you realise that nearly every one of them are into the "arts" and are actors, directors or some form of luvvie from Holywood. The whole thing looks like a daycare centre for lunatic actors. |

Scientology just shows you how far a drunk science fiction writer can take a bet. EXACTLY. People nowadays only know about L. Ron Hubbard because of the whole Scientology thing. They don't realize that before he started up this so called "religion" he was nothing more than a Science Fiction author. Let me ask you, would you join a religion that was started up by say, Stephen King, and take it seriously? What about J.R. Tolkien? Or Gene Roddenberry? (insert Trekkie jokes here) Read up a little on the man himself and it starts to become pretty clear: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion. - L. Ron Hubbard
The only way you can control people is to lie to them. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them. - L. Ron Hubbard

(insert Trekkie jokes here) Or that George Lucas chap. Wait a second... Yes, that is silly also, but to be fair Lucas isn't the one trying to start up some sort of "religion" based on his stories, that's being done by the fans themselves. Not fair to compare him to Hubbard in that sense. Hubbard himself actually started up Scientology and ran it personally for a long time. If you really want an eye opener do a google search on Hubbard, Scientology, and something called "Fair Game" ETA: Here, I'll make it easy for you... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Game_(Scientology) |
