I am considering joining a local gun range but I don't really like the idea of them requiring that I pay
$50 for a background check. Is this normal?

Every range around here that requires a membership (with the exception of one) does that.

Ok, thanks. They didn't used to, guess it's a sign of the times.

I never heard of it before.

I know Clubs that require a Current Member to nominate you for membership.  But run a background check?  Never heard of it before.

Not in TX.

I'm a member of 3 ranges. Most I've ever had to do was sit through a safety video.

In any event I would think they should accept your concealed carry license in lieu of a background check.

Same here.
But it has been a few years since I've been a member of any range.

The private club I belong to requires it, but a current CHP exempts you from it since it's a requirement of the CHP in the first place. A copy of it on file is all they need...

I have never heard of that

Never heard of any club doing that.

Some do, wouldn't bother me

My local one says they do but I think they just have a cop member run your DL, they don't charge (separately) for it

Depends on the club and what makes their insurance carrier comfortable.

Chances are they can run a quick check on you for felony convictions without you even knowing about it.

Membership dues yes. For a background check, no.
