There won't be a microSD slot on any Google or other high-end non-HTC android device going forward, I'd be willing to bet. Still, for $199/$249, you can't beat it for a Quad core Tegra 3 with 800p screen!

acer still has card slots on all there models. you would figure since the thing is made by them that it would have one. google claims its to keep the cost down but a SD card slot doesnt add that much to the build cost.

Waiting to see actual hands on user reviews (not from the tech sites) on the device before deciding to make the leap.

No microSD card slot is a major drawback since Google is trying to tie you to their version of the "cloud" just as Amazon is trying to do with the Kindle Fire's.

Why oh why couldn't Google not F things up and simply told Asus to ship the Asus Memo 370 that Asus showed at CES earlier this year? That was a killer device. It had a microSD slot AND an micro HDMI port.

They spent 4 months redesigning it and getting it to a point where they could sell them at cost for $199.

I agree with sbhaven.  Google fucked this up by not including the dropping the sd slot an hdmi port.  They easily could have in included them and still been competitive with the Samsung Galaxy that goes for $250.  Memory is a BIG deal with these units.

How I would have done it was keep the 8gb Nexus 7 as a direct compeditor to the Kindle Fire. Then had the 16gb version outfitted with the microSD and HDMI ports along with a rear facing camera and sell it at a $300 price point. Not going to be surprised if Apple comes out with a 7 inch iPad that will be $400 or more. Google with the 16gb Nexus 7 sporting a  rear facing camera, HDMI and microSD slot could have undercut Apple months before Apple could potentially deliver their own 7 inch version.

Preordered mine Wednesday.  Going with the 8GB.

I'm primarily going to use it as an ebook reader, so I was considering getting a Kindle Fire, but for the price, the Nexus 7 will kick the shit out of it.  Yeah, it sucks not having HDMI or an SD card slot, but for anything where I need a lot of memory or whatever, I can use my MacBook.  The Nexus 7 will be a niche device for me.  Not a do-it-all device.

I do hope they do better on accessories than Samsung did with the Galaxy Nexus.  I have the GN, and I love it... but the desk dock took MONTHS to get out, and they want fucking $90 for it!!  OMFG.  Really Sammy??

Agreed.  It would have been so simple to have a basic unit to compete with the Kindle Fire, and a few other options to include the micro sd card and HDMI port at say $250 and $300 or so.

Hopefully Asus will come out with its own version which includes the upgrades.

I keep hearing the mini iPad 7" rumors as well.  That would be perfect!

I haven't preordered, but may. I may wait until they hit the shelves, too. I was getting really close to going with a Blackberry Playbook (two of my kids have them, and I like them much better than a Fire), but for the same price, this looks much nicer.

Oddly enough, some of us like the smaller size in a portable device, and don't plan for it to replace a desktop in any way, that makes this a very appealing product. The Android OS is becoming pretty solid these days, HoneyComb (as on my wife's Galaxy Tab 10.1) is pretty damned good, I would hope that Jelly Bean is an improvement on that.

ETA: I really don't care much about the SD slot, it would be OK, but for me it just isn't a deal breaker. I am not a road warrior, and don't need hundreds of gigs of files, 16-32 GB is fine for me.

The lack of an SD card slot isn't a deal breaker for me, either.  I'm hoping, tho that it will be able to access USB drives with an adapter.  I do intend someday to get a small (2.5") external drive to dump my pictures to.  Also since the tablet has four contacts on one side, I'm hoping that means a dock, and I'm hoping THAT means USB connection(s) built into it.

No Nexus device has had an SD slot since the Nexus S came out in Dec 2010; only the Nexus One had it. I guess some others still have them; I know the HTC One does, but the Galaxy SIII doesn't. Meah, go figure; you'd think they'd be happy to save money by not having alot of built-in memory.

Anandtech has a review up with some benchmarking with other tablets. Interesting results.
Google Nexus 7 and Android 4.1 - Mini Review

Kind of stupid that reviewers continually try to compare a 7 inch $200 tablet to a 10 inch $400+ iPad, first with the Kindle Fire now with the Google Nexus 7.

Kind of warming up to buying one. Only major concern I have is what kind of tracking Google has included, and if it can be disabled.

The Anandtech link does have this bit...
Update 2: I've asked for further clarification about what USB-OTG functionality is supported. Using a mouse and keyboard will be supported, and I saw Google using an ethernet to USB adapter over USB-OTG as well. Unfortunately I found out that mounting USB storage will not be supported natively. In addition MHL is not supported.

So it appears that mounting USB storage many not be supported (at least natively).

A few more links on the USB storage and MHL issue with the Nexus 7...
Nexus 7 lacks USB OTG and MHL support, some more chinks in its armour
MHL and USB-OTG on the Nexus 7 - Mounting USB Storage Not Supported

Guess time will tell what else might be limited or crippled on this device.

USB support is most likely already included in the chipset. It would be just the port, connections to the chip, and accommodation to the case.  Very minor in costs.

The lack of USB is probably Google trying to capture more sells in Play Store.

I was thinking of getting an iPad but may get one of these instead. Like a lot of you, my biggest hangup at the moment is with a lack of storage expansion. I could see myself watching movies on it while I travel, etc, but I don't think even the 16gb is enough storage. Pretty disappointing, but for the price I think I can make it work.

Another review, this one from PCMag...
Google Nexus 7
That review makes note that the Wifi, while 802.11 b/g/n, operates only on the 2.4Ghz band.
A Wi-Fi-only device, the Nexus 7 connects to the Internet using 802.11 b/g/n, albeit only on the 2.4GHz band. I had no problem hooking into several WPA2-protected networks, although it dropped off of one of them at one point during testing. The tablet supports Bluetooth for audio and NFC to transfer files to other NFC-equipped Android devices. Interestingly, Google Wallet doesn't appear in Google Play on the Nexus 7, so, for now, at least, it doesn't look like you can make NFC credit-card payments here.

Androidforums.com has a thread with more media/blog hands on reviews of the Nexus 7...

I waited to see the specs of the Nexus 7 before ordering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch... after seeing it, I'll be going with the Galaxy.

SD slot, 2 cameras, better accessories, etc etc etc for $50 more.  The only downside is it uses a propitiatory cable, but they're cheap enough to keep a couple of spares around.

Refurbs or new. Prices seem to be coming down.
I have a 10 inch Acer Iconia A500. Nice enough for what I want to use it for.
Actually saw an Acer A200 at a Walmart near me for $299, or about $20 cheaper than the site.
Can't figure out why people want the 7 inch, a lot of the new phones are almost that large.
