Got a AC unit that was replaced last year, inside and outside units. we have had issues recently of the second story not being as cool as the bottom floor, by 5-6 degrees warmer. We are renting and emailed the landlady a few weeks ago and no response.

Well today when we got home the damn thing is not working now. The outside unit is not running at all. The inside unit is pulling air through the filters and it is pushing air out of the vents.

I checked the main breaker box and the box attached to the inside unit. Everything is fine there. There is a fuse box at the outside unit, that to be honest I could not tell you if it is a carry over from the old unit or is still connected. I pulled the cartridge and the fuses were warm, not hot, so I am assuming they are still connected.

Here are the fuses - how the hell do you tell if they are blown without a voltmeter or some such device?

The landlady hasn't cashed the previous 2 rent checks, she is old, we called tonight and she has been in the hospital. She has been a good landlady so I am not going to bash her at all. She gave the authorization to call the company that installed the unit last year, so we will see what tomorrow brings.

HVAC guys - what else can I check to see if I can get this running tonight?? I HATE being hot - very tempted to rent a hotel room - it is already 80 degrees upstairs.

For the WALL OF TEXT & I DON'T READ

AC is fracked and I need things I can check to get it to work tonight before, hopefully, AC guys arrive tomorrow to fix...

Use a continuity tester on the fuses. With those type of fuses get one!

Only one unit cooling the house or a unit for each story? If only one unit then its not a big surprise since heat rises. Same problem at my mom's house since its two story with only one unit.

Did you check the capacitors on the condenser outside?

Lowes and other places sell them. You should get one as they can do all sorts of things.

She would not go for 2 units and we put our money in to make sure we got a bigger unit. It has not been an issue until now...

Check the capacitors on the condenser unit outside.  Cheapest part to replace and usual culprit.  If everything was replaced last year it
should be under warranty.

Heat rises, so expect the top floor to be a few degrees warmer.

Did you check the capacitor? If its bulged or leaking then its bad.

If the issue on the upstairs just popped up, make sure the A/C tech checks the freon levels. It may have developed a leak.
