I have a lifetime Playon subscription I got a few years ago.. I haven't used it in a year or so, not since getting a couple Sony Blueray players that stream Netflix.
It needed a uPNP type server to run the software. it was okay. lots of content.. but I found myself fully satisfied being able to access Netflix and Youtube with my BR players. |
| Heard about it. For some reason Playon is "that which shall not be named" in the Roku support forums. Anytime they are mentioned the thread gets locked. Apparently there was some kind of falling out between Playon and Roku. There are several other software programs (Plex, Rocksbox) that can be installed on the PC which the Roku can stream from. |
| Just downloaded and installed the trial to an old laptop. Getting mixed results. Laptop is connected to the network via wireless G, while the Roku is connected via wireless N. Getting some lagging and audio out of sequence. The Playon info indicates that you should either connect via wire or use Wireless N. Getting a long multi minute delay when trying to watch shows, the content appears to begin downloading to the laptop and gets converted to a video format the Roku can play. More than once the Roku Playon interface times out and I have to try the episode again. This long delay is most likely due to having low RAM (1.5 GB), an older processor (Intel Centrino Duo), and or a slow broadband connecction (DSL 3mb). If you plan to run media from the local computer, VLC needs to be installed and the media folder assigned. For some reason any time I tried to view pictures in the assigned media folder on my local computer, the Roku Playon interface dumped me back to the main Roku lineup page and didn't display any pictures. |

i am on my 3rd trial of playon right now. frankly I think its a great idea but its shit. the 1st time I tried it, i used an AMD Athlonx2 4200 with 2 gigs of ram and XP to stream netflix to a soft modded xbox running xbmc. it was shit.
2nd time same setup with windows 7. it was shit. 3rd time p4 3.0 ghz 3 gig of ram windows 7 and a wd live tv. its shit again. maybe if i had some stupidly powerfull pc it might be OK. |

Rokus suck more than playon sucks. plex ALMOST works with a roku and rocksbux is shit. I solved all these problem and got a WD Live Tv. it can read files right off of either its 2 usb ports from external drives, from DLNA servers like a Qnap NAS, or from linux shares or from windows shares AND does netflix and hulu. |

Roku's sucks... for you. Others have no problems with them. Not everyone wants or needs to stream from DNLA servers or from OS shares. The Roku 2 XS that I have reads files off its USB port from external drives. Does it have limitations? You bet, but so does every other streaming media device ever made. The Roku has a diverse and growing list of private channel content available. Both the Roku and WD Live were designed to perform slightly different tasks, and each performs those task effectively. Those not satisfied with either product may find another product that suits their needs. |

I've got a 14 day free trial of playon. So far it hasn't been that great, lot's of stopping and buffering.
I read on the playon website that they recommend having the PC hard wired to the internet so that only the Roku is using the wifi. I'll try that. We'll see I guess.
