Some people wanted a thread about my back surgery so here it is.

I was scheduled for 3:30 this afternoon but they called earlier and had an opening so they bumped it up to 1:30. I have to check in at 11:30 so I'm about to head that way. Surgery is scheduled for 1:30-5:00.

L5-S1 fusion. Going through the front to pull out the disc and replace it with plastic then flip me over and put 4 bolts in through my back to hold it all together. I'll try to post some blood and guts pictures that I know yall all want to see, unless they kill me and in that case there won't be any pictures or updates.

Good Luck!  I am going to go through this with my neck in a couple weeks (C5, C6, and C7).  Must be a good time to become a neurosurgon I guess

Goodluck. I'm sure I'll have this done some day, not looking forward too it. Everyone told me to wait as long as possible to have anything like that done (I'm 38). So far, steroid injections every 6 or 7 years have kept it in check.

I had my back chopped up back in the early 90's (dirt bike crash).  It worked well.  Every so often, like the poster above, I get injections to keep the sciatica at bay.

I hope you fare well. Not every one does.

I had L4 L5 S1 fused 18 months ago and it was relatively pain-free.  Sneezing however brought me to tears on several occasions for about 2 months after.

Most neck and back surgeries don't seem to work.

My dad has done anesthesia for literally thousands of them over a 35 year span.

He has a disabling neck injury.

He refuses surgery.

He says you guys are just suckers who are being conned into a lifetime of narcotic scripts and repeat ineffective surgeries.

He has loved taking your money however.

I've had 2 major surgeries in my life plus a couple of "minor" ones.

One was the most wretched horrible experience of my life. Post Op it's my "10" when
asked to rate my pain. Nothing provided relief and I was suicidal with pain.

The other, while more invasive and complicated was a really good experience. Post Op hurt,
but wasn't horrible.

Here's hoping post op is like #2. I also hope you have good nurses at the hospital.

Morphine will be your friend. After the surgery get up and start walking asap regardless if you think your to stuck up to get help. If it means going from 1 wall to the other or 5 steps then do it.

Here is a after shot of mine.

My wife had L4-L5 fusion done last May, went in through her back and installed synthetic disc and bone graft from her hip and Ti plate with 4 screws. Fusion didn't take and the posterior hard ware was causing her fits with
Uscles rubbing over it. (she is in shape/active) Last month they did an ALIF (anterior Lumbar Interspinal Fusion) went in through her back, took out the old hardware, flipped her over and went through her stomach. Cut out failed fusion, replaced with cage and bone-growth-stimulator-mesh-looking-goopy-stuff and pu a plate with 4 more screws and sewed her up. She has a 4 inch scar on her back and a 6 inch on her stomach. She is only 29 and on her 2nd fusion.

Good luck bro!! Our best to you!!

Sadly, after several surgeries, I am inclined to agree; however, was to the point I could hardly walk, surgery fixed 1 thing, forked up other things, nerve damage, on and on.

I had L5-S1 fusion back in 10/07.  Glad I had it done!  No problems except for some occasional butt ache from overworking the SI joints as a result of the fusion.  Never-the-less, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This.....Back surgery is no fun at all. I'm lucky as it worked in my case and vastly improved the quality of my life even though it cost me a 70K a year job.

I had the exact same surgery in Feb 09. Good Lord did the rehab suck. However, my daily pain went from around a 7-8 to 3-4.  Get up and get walking ASAP. It's going to suck now, but you'll be better off in the long run.

Ok, I've been off the morphine since early this afternoon and I hurt like hell. I've been able to get up and go walking around and it's pretty damn painful. They're feeding me some hydocodone but it doesn't do much for the pain other than just take the edge off.

They said I'm doing better than most by getting up today but they still expect me to stay one more night after tonight do it'll probably be Friday when I get to come home.

There's a storm and cable is out so if anybody has questions, now is a great time to ask them.

See if you can get them to give you some Tordol (sp?) or if thats bad juju for your back. It's basically a super duper advil and it might have to be injected but man that shit controls pain better than anything else in the universe in my experience.

They were giving me toridol earlier with the morphine through IV. I didn't really notice it doing much to be honest. It's going to hurt and that's just part of it. I'm pretty tough so I'll live.

I didn't think it did much either until later when I didn't have it to augment the more recreational types of stuff they gave me. But, yes you are correct about the pain part not being optional. Do your best with it but don't try to be a super hero and bear it out any worse than it has to be. Just my $.02

Heal well, and heal quick

I'm getting released from the hospital today. I'm down to taking 2 norco 10's every 4 hours. It's pretty rough that 3rd hour but it's getting easier. I expect there will be a world of difference in the pain level between today and in two days from now.

After having this junky hospital food all week I'm ready for something good. My wife and I are going to stop at Kenny's burger joint on the way home.

If somebody can upload and host some pictures I've got a few more for the thread.

Hope it works out for you, good thing you have an appetite.
I was a fit 220# at 6 foot the end of 2009.
After fusion in Jan. 2010, another in Dec. 2010, down to 180 or so, can't work out like I used to, fusions failed, just some rods and screws keeping me upright, rest of spine crapping out, advanced discogentitis and such, lot to look forward to, doesn't matter, cause I.D.G.A.F.
Not bitching, get around decent, Best To You.

P.S., watch for any sign of infection, is what screwed me up everytime, blame it on the huge amount of I.V. steroids before, during, and after surgery, really weakens immune system.
Is what they give organ transplant patients to ensure body does not reject donor organ.
Had 3 surgeries, any questions, shoot me a mssg., pretty well informed on subject.
