Is that a purpose built handgun for target shooting or something?

Yes. It's basically a step short of a completely dedicated full-on target gun. They tend to be incredibly accurate.

I want.  It's on the list but pretty far down due to price.

One of the nicest factory built 22 pistols ever made.

My uncle had two back in the '80s....he STILL talks about how he regrets selling both.

DO WANT!!!!!!

It's high on the list of things I want to get, but low on the list of when I will get one.

I only got to shoot one once, but I had a serious zen moment when I shot it. Ten yards, ten shots, two targets, two holes.  When I looked at my targets the first thing that came to mind was, "how did I miss eight times?"

That was four years ago, and I shoot my own pistols better than I used to, but I have yet to match what I did with that Model 41.

I am Volquartsen-izing a Ruger MKIII to try to get close though!

Yes, you can also ask the severely reduced squirrel population for confirmation.

The trigger is perfect. Never have I felt one so nice and smooth.

I used to work with a kid who had money than sense and he picked up a cherry Model 41.  Within six months he beat the dogshit out of that gun. Chipped grips, buggered screws, scratches, leaded barrel, and fucking rust.  I still hate that kid to this day for the way he treated that pistol.

My only, and favorite, .22 pistol as of now.  It is a work of art.

Buy one if you can.  I prefer the used ones.  The finish on the new ones simply can't match an older M41.

Mine is in a safe far away. Wife went shopping for maternity cloths. We were supposed to meet up for supper, I was killing time at Cabelas waiting, waiting, waiting.
Eventually after already loading the cart gave a call. Another hour you say, can I get a 22 for the baby - sure.

What?!

Its a Smith and Wesson .41

MAGNUM

Model 58. Also very accurate.  Afriend and I were shooting at a local pit, someone had some bowling pins set up, maybe 60 yards out. I pulled out the Smith and rolled one. " That was a lucky shot!" said my friend. " No luck involved" said I, and rolled pin number two. " Gimmie that " said friend, " now where were you holding?" said he. Down went pin number three.

I do admire those model 41 s though. They are beautiful! I do want!

This wasn't in the best shape when I got it, but it shoots, and it was cheaper than a new one.  Amazingly accurate.

Midway USA catalogs them.

I don't have any pics of mine but it's a stock 5.5" with target sights.

When I started out shooting I used a Ruger MKII, but last year I decided to ditch it in favour of the Smith and I couldn't be happier with that decision. It's the finest American-made target .22 and is definitely comparable to classic Hämmerlis and Uniques.

I have a bad bad itch for a M41. I love my 622 and it cannot even compare. I was eyeballing the Performance Center model available on Davidsons. My only saving grace is they are out of stock.

I've always been impressed with the ballistics of the .41Mag. If I ever see one for sale............

I do have a MODEL 41, just no pics.

I have one and it is like an Italian race car.  It is gorgeous and when it runs, it runs great.  But often it isn't running. Mine is extremely picky about ammo and now fails to fire (primer indented, but no boom) every 10 rounds or so.

Tall sights and a rail. Perfect for a can and a RDS.

That's highly unusual. Think about sending it to S&W or someone that works on them.

Would like one, but I've read that you shouldn't use hi-velocity ammo in them. Is that true?

The good ole days of high quality machined steel art.  The pure JUNK that is sold today of plastic and pot metal is disgusting.  It's not even expected that they work or fall apart.  Sad thing is most newer shooters have no idea how bad they have it.

If I ever get rich I'm going to make old school Pythons, SW41s, and High Standards.

Eh... This usually starts an argument. The manual doesn't say anything about using SV ammo only, and for the most part you don't need to worry about it. In fact if you call S&W I think the CS reps will tell you that it will eat anything you feed it. Some older .22's would be harmed by using HV ammo because the slide would slam into the breech face real hard and cause the frame to crack. This caused people to think that EVERY older design of .22 pistol would be harmed by HV ammo.

It functions BETTER with SV ammo (mostly because SV ammo is usually target ammo of various qualities), and if you're concerned you can add a buffer to the gun and a heavier recoil spring, which anyone that knows how to use a variety of hand tools and is comfortable taking a gun apart can do.

Lot's of people have been feeding HV ammo for thousands of rounds through 60 year old guns without a problem, other people would say that it's like feeding manure to a racehorse. YMMV.
