...to the dude who let his car roll backward into my front bumper at work on Friday.
Sitting at my desk I take a call from PD dispatch asking me to come out to the parking lot because my car's been hit. There's some red paint on my (blue) fiberglass bumper cover (it probably will buff out ) and the foam absorber beneath is no longer backing it in that spot. Dude parked uphill from me across the aisle, left it in neutral and didn't set his brake. Story from Dude is that he just got a contractor job on post, hasn't even got his first paycheck yet, and cancelled his insurance a while ago to make ends meet. I request the full PD workup just to have the report and photos done since you only get the one shot at it and it's better to protect everyone's interests in the long run. I won't be filing a claim of my own. Dude has verbally committed to making it right.
Now I'm not o'erly prone to fits of compassion (though GD makes me feel like Jesus Himself, on occasion), but I'm not exactly chomping to put him through a wringer either. He was trying to play my heart strings a bit which irritates me, but I can be the bigger man. I think if he buys a new absorber (dealer quote was $120, found it cheaper online but nobody will ship it) and shows up on a Saturday with a case of Dr. Pepper to help me swap it I'd be willing to call it good. Sound reasonable or should I let the system teach him a lesson? |

Quoted:
Accidents happen, but there is no reason to be without insurance. He should learn from his mistake. Yeah, this is where I'm torn. I've been poor enough to have to suspend my insurance, but in doing so I left the car parked. Sucked having to bum rides or walk everywhere, but that was what it took. I was willing to just deal with it in the parking lot with a handshake, but when he said he didn't have insurance I called the officer back over and requested the full report. |
